My Volvo 960 had rare trouble slipping on brutal cold days the past 2 winters. In February it really started to slip. Badly, forward and back. I took it to 2 local shops and they prescribed like $2,000 remanufacturer but they couldn't get the parts (we're in Canada). I declined. Changed the fluid and got 3 more weeks out of it and then it stopped completely. 400,000 km. I have a $600 used unit coming this week and will have that popped in. Then I'll disassemble my old one to see what happened. If luck, it's basically a rebuild kit. Wish me luck.

@@GaryFerraro It's a 97. The past 2 winters it would slip immediately on startup on a brutally cold day. This year Feb it got a lot worse and then became undrivable. Weirdly, if I stopped the engine and re-started, it improved and I could continue without slipping but then it would start to slip again. Plus a groaning sound. I honestly don't know what the problem was. Very few places will do a real diagnosis. I'll swap in the used transmission (I need the car for a small business) and then disassemble the transmission to see what might be obvious. I'll let you know what I find.

It’s not very loud , the transmission shifts perfect , no shudder nothing just the little whine . The fluid is clean because i change it every 15k miles due to pullig a trailer daily . Great video! I,ve got one in Guyana, SA, that seemed to work perfectly. Then noticed a slight loss of power on a steep hill, but it worked as normal and figured it was the few extra folks I was giving a ride to? Then I came home to Florida for a few months. Returned to GY and went to move it and it hesitated for a few seconds, then drove normal. Got to the steep hill and didn't want to climb. Made it up, then drove home like normal. Next day, no more moving in any direction. I'm out in the jungle with the nearest "transmission mechanic" an hour airplane ride away. I built a ramp and elevated platform to start wrenching, but decided to tackle it on my next trip after coming home and watching KZbin... Here I am:) Any ideas??

Gary, is the A340 similar enough to the A343F to use videos for that transmission to help me rebuild my 97 LandCruiser trans? More videos for the A340. Was thinking about installing an LS 6.0 engine and 6L90 into my 97 but rebuild videos for the 6L90 show me that it’s not as reliable a transmission as I had originally thought. At 66, I’m kinda old to return to auto classes even if I enjoy the heck out of them. Took auto mechanics and auto body but I’ve been working in the Middle East for the past 15 years. Still want to learn and build my own in retirement, videos seem to be the most logical approach. Thanks.

Hello Gary. Thanks for another great video. I recently bought a 2009 BMW 750li with zf6hp transmission. The car wasn't moving forward or backward, even if the shifter goes in D and R and it stays there. We aren't able to push the car if it had the engine on even it was in N. We take off the oil pan and the fluid was really black with burnt smell and low. We changed the sleeves, 7 liters of fluid and the pan. Now the car is acting weird, it goes in drives and move forward, changes the gears but it gives kicks. In neutral its going forward, and reverse goes forward 1 foot and stops aggressive. It also has a metallic noise sometimes. What's your opinion? I regret I didn't change the solenoids too. Thank you

I have an A343F in my Toyota Prado (similar to 4runner) and it's almost impossible to get a reliable repeatable reading. I'm doing it with the trans warm, in N with motor running. Makes it so easy to trick yourself into overfilling.

I have this trans in a volvo 960 (144k miles). Getting codes for "no torque converter lockup" and "trans fluid temp sensor." I assume the sensor's bad and that's preventing the lockup due to no signal to ECM. I'd replace the sensor, but can't find one - anywhere. Any guidance? Trans otherwise works fine, but I'm keeping it off the highway until/unless I can get the torque converter to lock up again.
@GaryFerraro Жыл бұрын
If the converter is slipping, it generates a lot of heat, very possible the Temp code came on because converter is slipping, this you may not feel
@upload2352 Жыл бұрын
@@GaryFerraro Thanks for the quick response! The excess heat is why I'm limiting usage to short hops. So, I may have the cause/effect of the two conditions reversed. If so, and it's not the sensor's signal to the ECM, I need to know why the converter's not locking up. If it's a Big Deal, like a converter replacement, then that's a car-killer for this '98 volvo, but if you have other suggestions about what to look at that might be more do-able, I'd appreciate the chance to save the car. It may help you to know that the "failure mode" here was "gradually reduced periods between the Check Engine light coming on after clearing the last code, until it would basically come on right away." If that triggers a light bulb moment, let me know! Too bad for me you're not in Seattle. Thanks again.

So I assume that with fused steels and discs, you have to replace both and can't reuse even the steels? I'm working on an A140E from a '92 Camry that has no reverse and a similar likely cause, a blocked cooler line (some idiot mechanic forgot to remove the factory plug when installing a new radiator) leading to no oil cooling and overheated oil. I have the trans mostly apart but haven't examined the parts in detail yet so I don't know yet if it's worn friction discs, a worn band, fused steels and discs, stripped gears or splines, bad valve, etc.
