Blackpool Trams Centenary 1985

Love this video! I was so lucky to have visited Blackpool several times during the 80s and watching this video brings back everything good that I remembered of the period and this video captures it all. I had the most unfortunate opportunity recently to visit Blackpool recently and I felt nothing but sadness. Thank you so much for the video. Brings back everything that was once good that was sadly lost a long long time ago.

I know exactly what you mean Sam, it's happened all over the country though, not just Blackpool, the next generation have a lot to answer to, but at least it shows that it was down to the likes of us that gave places like Blackpool the atmosphere that it once held.

@@yorkiesteve9453 Thank you Steve Sir! I genuinely feel sad for the world today and for tomorrow! Yesterday had it hard but that’s why we and it is here today! It made us strong! I genuinely can’t find words to describe the sites, sound and smells that f 80s Blackpool! No one can and no one ever will! You had to live you it, their and then! Their was no health and safety BS, you just got on Tramnik one when and of it stopped at your stop! GOD forbid anyone that safely gets on a tram alive! What happened in the world that made all that was good, so bad? Blackpool was magic! I have that magic deep within and no one will ever take that from me! Long gone are the days of an evening at the end of the pier with…… Today, you are lucky if the pier is open after 1pm depending on light and if light conditions are ok, or if their is potential for sleepiness during a “joke”. The best Blackpool had and give is long long gone! Thank god I have the memories, I pity those who have / get the regrets!

The 3 things that were uniquely 'Blackpool' in the early 1980s were: The tower, trams & the music of Reginald Dixon. I have only been to Blackpool once, in the early '80s. I never bothered with the Pleasure Beach. I got on a Railcar & went to Fleetwood instead. What struck me was the varnished wood and the pedimented door to the driver's cab inside the Railcar. Whether there were coconut fibre doormats for you to wipe your feet I don't recall, but it was all very luxurious compared to a regular bus. At Fleetwood the trams shared the street with the other traffic & still do, but in 1981 they still had to dodge cars by The Metropole Hotel. Coming back I had to break my journey at Cleveleys & wait on what seemed like an 'island' in the street. At 3:16 we see the shelter I waited in. One unusual feature of the system was the sidings at Thornton Gate. I never figured out their original purpose & they are long-gone now. I love the bustling crowds & the energy of the place. As it is getting dark at 7 pm I assume this was filmed in the 1985 Illuminations season, but not the precise day.

it is good that Blackpool Transport kept the tramway running were as other places in mainland Britain did away their trams. in 1985 saw the arrival of the Centinery tram go into service. the first new tram in Britain. the next new lot of trams wouldnt arrive in Britain until 1991 in Manchester so for thirty odd years or so Bllackpool would the only public tramway in the UK at that time
