@jamescarpenter65854 жыл бұрын
It’s not fair to hark on about this race as Coe v Ovett. Ovett (post LA Olympics) was not able to compete at this level and only competed for his love of running. Coe wasn’t so great himself but still able to win domestic races of this ilk. If you’re going to compare Seb and Steve at this stage in their careers, people should also take into account that Ovett was winning AAA 800 metres in 1974, a good three to four years ahead of Coe’s emergence.
@deano276712 жыл бұрын
After LA Coe was ranked #1 in '86 over 800m as well as European champion over the distance. He was also the fastest in the world over 1500m in 86 - 3:29.77. The year this was run he won silver in the 1500m World Cup and was the 2nd fastest in the world over 800m (1:43.38). So while he wasn't at his career peak and you are correct to say that this shouldn't be labeled as a 'Coe v Ovett' clash, Coe was still better than just winning 'domestic races' like this.

Also, he ruled himself out of running in the 800m in Seoul even before the trials.
