Jharia, situated in the Coal Capital of India- Dhanbad (Jharkhand), represents the largest coal reserves in India having estimated reserves of 19.4 billion tonnes of coking coal (also called metallurgical coal). Most of India's coal comes from Jharia. Jharia coal mines are India's most important storehouse of prime coke coal used in blast furnaces.

Jharia's coal is an important ingredient of India’s growth story but there's another side of the story as well.Jharia coalfield has been burning for over 100 years. People, living in nearby areas, are sitting on the top of an active volcano waiting for a catastrophic future. The living condition is poor (or more precisely hellish) as the air and water is contaminated, resulting in poor health condition. Moreover, the ground is so hot at places, that walking even in shoes is near impossible. The place is not suitable to stay but still, people live in this mouth of hell.
Aag Ka Jharia - A Hindi Poem - asks a simple question what's the cost poor pay for the development of this country.
