So Aaliyah re-recorded her vocals for the single version of the song, which is what the music video uses. The album version isn’t as good, production or vocal-wise. She said the reason for this was that between 95/96 and ‘97 her voice matured a bit more (she more easily hits certain notes and has more power on the single version). Diane Warren asked her label if she could work with Aaliyah because she liked Aaliyah and wanted to write a song specifically for her to challenge and push her vocally, (Diane Warren wrote hit after hit in the 90’s). Anyway, I think one of the reasons we didn’t hear this side of Aaliyah that often was because of her writers. Missy always said the songs she wrote for Aaliyah were almost rap-sung because Missy wasn’t a singer, so Aaliyah’s vocals were never pushed when Missy wrote her something. But because Diane Warren wrote songs for SANGERS (Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, etc), she was able to push Aaliyah’s voice to showcase this side of it
