This was from U.F.O.'s 1977 album 'Lights out' w/ their most iconic line-up of: Phil Mogg (vocals), Pete Way (bass), Michael Schenker (lead guitar), Andy Parker (drums) and Paul Raymond (keyboards/ guitar) ... Sadly, Pete Way and Paul Raymond have passed away (R.I.P.) Some of U.F.O.'s biggest songs were on this record - 'Lights out' ... 'Too hot to handle' ... 'Try me'... Michael Schenker (lead guitar) was from (West) Germany and was a founding member of the Scorpions (He is the younger brother of Scorpions guitarist Rudolf Schenker) before he left in 1973 to join U.F.O. and recorded some of their biggest albums in the 70's... He split from the band in 1978 and briefly rejoined the Scorpions in 1979, and then left to form his own band M.S.G. (Michael Schenker Group) in the 80's ... He was credited for bringing classical music influences into rock music and was a huge influence on 80's rock/ metal guitarists like - Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and Slash of Guns N' Roses... Mogg and Way kept U.F.O. active in the 80's and 90's w/ various musicians but never recaptured that early success... Michael Schenker did return to U.F.O. in the 90's and recorded a few albums before leaving again in 2003. U.F.O. recorded and toured in their final years w/ guitarist Vinnie Moore (since 2003) until 2019 and did well during those years ... Vocalist Phil Mogg's health problems resulted in U.F.O.'s final 2022 tour being canceled; Mogg announced recently that U.F.O. was over.

One of the most, if not the most criminally underrated rock bands. In my opinion, Michael Schenker, is a top 5 guitarist in the industry. He left UFO, formed his own band, The Michael Schenker Group, and put out some amazing rock and roll with MSG. Back to UFO, please give Lights Out and Rock Bottom a listen (live versions). These are two iconic songs with amazing guitar solos. I still listen to their live album, Strangers In The Night, often.

Michael Schenker is a big reason why we had all of those great guitarists in the 1980’s and beyond. Many guitarists from the “Heavy Metal” era were inspired to pick up a guitar and learn to play because of Michael Schenker. UFO and the Scorpions, both used a lot of orchestration in their music from the beginning. I mean most of the world’s great classical composers were from Germany, Austria, and other parts of Europe for the most part, so the use of violins and other orchestral instruments is naturally “bred into” their musical pedigrees.

Thanks my dear, you just put a Huge Smile on this 69 year old's face! You just did one of the very best reviews of a UFO song I have ever seen. Your analysis was spot on, coming from an esteemed musical background, you immediately recognized this was no ordinary rock band, but one that though never huge with the general public, they had a loyal and vibrant fan base that would travel to see those guys, one of the very best Rock Bands in the 70s and into the 80s. They had great instrumental interplay, some great songs and unique compositions, real pros. Next you should try their seminal anthem, Rock Bottom, it is a studio classic that takes on a life of its own live, try it from Strangers In the Night Live, one of the best live albums ever. My UFO Journey started in 1974 when we heard Rock Bottom on a college radio station, the 20 or so of us outside, partying, and everyone stopped what they were doing when that song came on. Got the Phenomenon album the next day and have been a UFO fan ever since. They had 5 incredible albums in a row, starting with that one, with Michael Schenker on amazing melodic lead guitar with one of the best tones ever, he creates solos like no other. Master musician. The rest of the band was as well, that unit was the classic lineup. Michael left as that great live album was being released to form his own great band, MSG. They replaced him with another great guitarist in Paul Chapman, who would have 4 more great albums with him. He left in 85 and had several lead guitarists follow, including Michael Schenker and the classic lineup reuniting for several more awesome albums. They finished up with Vinnie Moore On lead guitar and just retired about the time of the pandemic as Phil Mogg's health started to force him to stop touring after 50 years on the road. I saw them 5 times, 3 times with Schenker in the 70s, once each with Chapman in 1981and Moore in 2004. All great shows. The band is well worth your time, please do more and enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶🔥

As a classically trained opera singer you definitely have to listen to some songs by Gentle Giant, great cult legendary progressive rock band from England. Their main composer, the only keyboardist and cellist and occasional singer, Kerry Minnear, was PhD in composition from London Royal Academy of Music. Not only was he a virtuosic keyboard player and a pretty decent cellist / percussionist - he could sing by notes. His voice was rather weak physically (so he preferred to sing in studio, not on stage), but still he was your colleague to an extent. You may try to listen to Gentle Giant's song Aspirations to fully appreciate his voice and his sense of composition.

Michael Schenker just released his album, My Years With UFO, a 50th Anniversary Celebration, on September 20, 2024, featuring a bunch of guests vocalists and musicians playing 11 UFO songs. Axl Rose sings “Love to Love”. It sounds great but it doesn’t match the original albums/songs or the chemistry of the band at that moment in time. That can never be recreated. 🙂 I did preorder the album the DAY that Michael announced that he was going to record it though. 😉
