Man, I am so excited and glad you’ve heard Chris sing, and also one of his best songs. He is considered far and wide one of the greatest rock singers of all time. It comes down to the things you mentioned: the extended range, major power and true soul of his voice. He greatly excels at each, and Chris has very few if any peers in those categories. On top of all that, he was also a tremendous songwriter and lyricist. He’s been my favorite male vocalist for some time now. There’s really no one like him, nor will there ever be.

This is probably the most emotional recording of this song - Andrew hadn’t been gone long and the song(and the memory) was really fresh.

Temple of the Dog was a combination of members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament were members of Mother Love Bone and bandmates of Andrew Wood. Andrew died of a heroin overdose just days before the band's first major label album was due to be released. Soundgarden vocalist, Chris Cornell (who had been good friends with Andrew and, at one time, room mates) wrote two songs as tributes to Andrew and recruited Jeff and Stone to record them. The "project" went from just those two songs into being a full length album of ten songs. The name "Temple of the Dog" comes from a line in the Mother Love Bone song "Man of Golden Words". It was during rehearsals of the songs that newly recruited Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Veder stepped up to the mic simply to help Chris demonstrate what "Hunger Strike" was supposed to sound like. Chris originally had intended to do the vocals on "Hunger Strike" himself but liked what Eddie did so much that he completely re-wrote the song, turning it into a duet...which later became Temple of the Dog's biggest hit. Eddie can been seen in this video, sitting to the side of the drums, singing backing vocals.

The band members here are essentially what would become Pearl Jam. Chris is your huckleberry. He does so many fantastic covers of popular songs. I suggest "Nothing compares to you" or "Billie Jean". Although his cover of the Beatles "A day in the life" is also great. Oh shit, i forgot his cover of Led Zeppelin's Thank You. Take your pick. Chris Cornell's vocal range is next level!!!!!

Miley Cyrus sang this at the Chris Cornell tribute concert and it's great. I highly recommend checking it out as well. To say the audience was skeptical when she stepped out on stage is an understatement but by the end everyone was in awe. She knew Chris ever since he used to bring his kids to the set of Hannah Montana. And you can really hear how the emotion of the moment and the significance of the song really takes over in her performance kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaOokq2frrV5aMk

Great song and review. I'd love to see you review a couple from Simon & Garfunkel, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is a masterpiece, and there is a more rare song that I like called "For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her." Both showcase the stunning voice of Art Garfunkel. The earlier versions from the 1960's were the best, as compared to their reunion some 40+ years later. You won't be disappointed.

So important thing to know is that this was recorded way before these guys were super famous. The recording equipment that was used was pretty awful. And I think the sound engineers did a really bad job with the mix. I would definitely recommend listening to Chris Cornell in later years. And definitely take a listen to the studio version of this song.

I saw him live on his solo tour, and the sound engineers absolutely destroyed that show, too. I'm still grateful I was there, but I paid to hear HIM, and they had the instruments drowning him out so bad! Just really disappointing.

In my thinking - singing is supposed to express emotion. And I don't believe there is any set formula for that. It depends on the artist and the listener and whether or not they agree. I think the type of music you enjoy reflects much about you, and everybody's story is different, so we can't possibly agree that one style is best. For instance, while I truly admire singers like yourself, for your dedication and skill, and adherence to preserving a specific style... I just like dirty garage band music equally as much - it's just a different emotion, being expressed differently - and isn't that what art is supposed to be about?
