comment guidelines for those unaware: -only discuss things that they’ve already seen, nothing upcoming. it’s fine to remind them of certain things after the fact but don’t point out specific details to note that they haven’t on their own. -do not confirm or deny theories that they have. they will figure it out. -do not explain things that the show itself will tell them later on. -lastly, PLEASE try not give bias opinions on upcoming events or characters. let them decide for themselves who they’ll like or dislike. even ones such as “wait until you meet!…” is toeing the line. they would have no idea who that person was if they were watching on their own right? so let’s not set expectations that they otherwise wouldn’t have. i know we’re all excited to see their reactions but they won’t be genuine if the guys already know what to expect. comments that break the rules have to be removed and that sucks so please be careful. thanks guys!

That scene with zuko at the end was maad deep and something I lowkey didn't understand when I was watching this show as a kid but now I realize how depressing it is. As if no matter how hard he tries he will never be able to achieve anything, especially unlike his sister azula. "You never held back before" just proof showing the way zuko sees himself and his life. "well I can take it....and now I can give it back"......this really shows that now even when he's ready and can finally show his progression and how much he improved, from his view, not even the world wants to give him a chance to prove himself. Imagine having the world turn against you and throw everything at you and when you trained and your finally ready to face up......it doesn't even give you the opportunity to retaliate for your own honor......it's as if the whole world is against you. Sad.
@daddybendover693 жыл бұрын
I really like this interpretation. I saw it as he is begging the world to attack him and it isn't. Almost like he thinks that the entire universe wants to hurt him and in that moment he realizes that it isn't trying to hurt him. He isn't being personally targeted by the universe. Like the universe is hearing him say "Strike me! You've never held back before." and its replying "We aren't attacking you. The universe isn't your enemy" and he's kind of coming to terms with the fact that all his trauma isn't some grand design, it was just that his dad is an asshole and he can't defeat the universe to get closure he just has to accept what happened to him. I kinda always saw it as he finally cries because he starts to admit to himself that he isn't okay and he does have emotional turmoil, the universe isn't feeding into the lies he tells himself.

Remember in season one, the episode about the winter solstice when Iroh gets captured by some earth Benders? The design of those helmets is also a display of what earth bending means: face your problems head on. You move the rock, the rock does not move you. The helmet shields against Firebending meant they could face a blast of fire head first and stand their ground. I love that little design detail.
@Jojokumpel3 жыл бұрын
Once again the parallels strike between Zuko and Aang. In this episode they both are evolving in bending/training. And as Iroh speaks about the other elements to Zuko, so does Katara to Aang to help them understand the bigger picture. What I noticed about Zuko in this episode, there are two things: First, he feels guilty. Why? Probably because his uncle got hurt trying to save Zuko. Like Iroh said in the last episode, Zuko needed to travel alone to find his own place in the world. But Uncle stayed near enough to help him, if needed, but far away to not influence his behavior. When encountering Azula and definetly losing the fight, Uncle came and rescued him. But while doing so he got injured. Zuko probably must feel guilty for everything he done in the last days/weeks. He left his uncle alone in a foreign country (even tho Iroh supported his decission, Zuko doesnt know this) and because of his stubberness he got his uncle injured. Zuko was cleary after a rematch with his sister (he tracked her Train of Death thingy). The Avatar wasnt in his mind after the north pole at all. Like uncle said, capturing the avatar wont undo his problems anymore. His father surely wants to see him dead even if Zuko gave him the avatar. The second, Zuko clearly noticed he is too weak compared to Azula. He got roasted by an outnumbered Azula. He wants to improve, to beat her, so he is able to protect Uncle and never let him beeing injured again. How did I see this? Well, Zuko fiercely wants to learn the new moves, like shooting lighting and redirect them. Also, he wants to get hurt. First his failed lighting shots. What person would cause explosion after explosion right infront of your face over and over again? Most would stop at the first failed attempt. Some may try a few times. but Zuko didnt stop. He continued hurting himself (the "never giving up" mind is a fix part of him, like you could see in "Zuko Alone"). And furthermore, he was even going for the thunders. That also may caused him cry at the end. All the guilt and other emotions came up to him after not getting punished in the way he felt he should be. Another thing I noticed right now while watching your reaction (but I am not 100% sure), its the very first time Uncle started to guide Zuko. Until now, especially in book 1, Zuko was the one ordering and Uncle just "float with it". Like he would be the father of a little boy and just wants his kid to have "fun" without intervening too much. But after Zuko left for a while to become a "man", Iroh aknowledged him as a person on the same level as himself. He was starting to teach him more important things and the way Iroh is talking to Zuko is completly different to book 1, as if Iroh is talking with an adult now and not a teenager anymore (atleast i feel this way kinda). In book 1 I felt Iroh was morelikely a "backseat spectator". But I dont know, what do you guys think about this theory? Last but not least, Raphaels humor is on point xD and the way Gabriele and Michael look while Raph even explain his joke xD they both thought "my days, I cant be related to this human. I've got to talk with my parents" xD

There is something that is really important to remember here: All of Aang's companions (except Sokka) are prodigy benders. However, none of them are particularly good teachers. Even Katara, the most normal of them, only had her brother to speak to. Both Toph and Katara are essentially self-taught. To be a good teacher, you need not only the skills being taught, but the ability to communicate and to determine whether the communication was successful. To be a good teacher, you need not only the skills being taught, but the ability to communicate and to determine whether the communication was successful.

I've seen this show many times, but I only just realised that Iroh says 'If you're lucky, you won't have to use this technique at all." And I think that was just the last straw for Zuko, who has been told and is convinced he's never been lucky in his life. I don't think Iroh realises how Zuko has internalised this, but imagine how it must feel for Zuko to have the one person always at his side basically saying he's sure to get shot at by lightning, and then refuse to teach him! So all Zuko hears is how Iroh, whom he trusted, is ready to let him die. (Yes, we all know Zuko isn't in the best place right now, but it explains so much!)

The order in which the avatar learns the elements is there for a reason. As discussed in season 1, trying to skip past an element isn't a great idea. All of the bendings are also martial arts and like any good martial art, they come with their own philosophies. Airbending is always about evading and avoiding, as stated by King boomi. It's corkscrew thinking, it's solving problems in unusual ways. It's why Aang came up with that lie at the end of Great divide. Those people needed an excuse to give up a feud, so Aang lied and it worked. Earth bending is based on facing problems head on. You can't approach it with corkscrew thinking. You have to plant your feet, stand your ground, and say "no, you move". An avatar that starts as an airbender, has to learn water bending before Earth bending. Water bending has some of that corkscrew thinking, it's built on using your opponent's strength against them. But it can be stubborn and rigid, like ice. Water flows but it also erodes. As we saw in this episode, when faced with a projectile, a water bender slices it out of the air, rather than just dodging it. Learning water bending before Earth bending helps an airbender shift their thinking towards stubbornness. All of the avatar elements aid in learning the next one down the line. Fire bending and airbending are both active and energetic, and learning air bending teaches you corkscrew thinking, to help a passionate fire bender become a calm water bender.

Uncle, we all love you, but I think you are wrong about something here. I think you are missing something very important about your nephew. Not because you are a bad uncle, or because you don't love him enough, but because you are a different person and have had a very different life. When Uncle started talking about shame, pride, and humility, he forgot a word: arrogance. True humility is the antidote to arrogance, not shame, arrogance isn't the same as pride, and pride isn't always a bad thing. Iroh is the much older first born son of Firelord Azulan. He was the son of the most powerful man in the world, raised with power, had all the best training, groomed and trained to be the next Firelord. He had both the pride of his skill in firebending, and the arrogance of being the firstborn son and crown prince of a colonizing, military nation that was winning a war against the rest of the world. He had both the power and arrogance to believe that it was his destiny to destroy a city that had never attacked his home, when it was his nation, his father and grandfather, who had started and kept going a war against the rest of the world. The 600 day siege of Ba Sing Se, that only ended when his son was killed, Lu Ten, Zuko and Azula's cousin. Not anybody else's son. Not the hundreds of Fire Nation people who fought for him and died, far away from home, crushed by earth benders, just so he could conquer a city, Not the thousands of people who died just because they were defending their home against in invading force. None of that mattered, until it was his son who died. That was the arrogance of Azulan's favorite son, the grandson of Sozin who destroyed the Air Nomads in an act of total genocide. Losing his son broke him. Finally, the humility to see other men, other people's sons, fathers, brothers, and family, as lives that were also mourned and lost. That's what it took to break the arrogance of his beliefs that the Fire Nation, the nation he was the second most powerful person, was not always right. That the other nations had equal value and were worth learning from. And to be fair, not many people in his position could have learned that. He did learn humility, and had the inner strength to re-evaluate every single thing he had believed in his whole life - beliefs that lead him to destroy thousands of other people's lives. Only humility could be the antidote to his arrogance. Zuko, on the other hand, was raised with the arrogance of his place in the Fire Nation royal family, but with shame in himself instead of pride. He was not the firstborn son of the Firelord growing up, he was the grandson of the Firelords younger son. And we saw in Zuko Alone, he was never the favored child compared to Azula. "She was born lucky, I was lucky to be born." "You'll never catch up, dum-dum." I'll come back to this later, but Zuko is ashamed of himself, for never being good enough, strong enough, he can never catch up with his younger sister, or earn his father's love. To resolve his inner turmoil he needs to be proud of himself and what he can do. That pride has to come from within, not based on his father's (abusive, cruel) approval, not by showing up his sister. The pride that is the antidote to shame is honest pride in what he can do and valuing for himself what he is worth. Pride in oneself is not the arrogance to think that one is better than everybody else. Right now, Zuko has the toxic combination of being ashamed of himself as a total failure, mixing with the arrogance of his upbringing thinking that the Fire Nation and fire bending is superior to all the other nations and elements. He needs honest pride to heal his shame, and humility to temper his arrogance. Iroh, who was not raised with shame, and only felt shame about what he did after he lost his son and failed at Ba Sing Se (which was only about 6 years ago) doesn't get the difference between shame and humility, arrogance and pride. He's trying to help his nephew that he loves and can tell is in a lot of inner pain, but he just doesn't have the same perspective to get what Zuko is going through. I think Zuko is the strongest character in the show, because he keeps going no matter how many times he loses. Azula was raised with both pride and arrogance, and she's a true prodigy. But she would break under half the challenges and losses that Zuko just keeps going through. I think that is why so many people love Zuko, because he represents what it takes to keep going even when he is at his lowest point.

Also, about Azula - we saw her use her nails to scratch Zuko in 2x1, where we see them fight - Zuko uses fire bending and she taunts and blocks him until she gets him into position on her ship where she uses fire bending to knock him away and down the steps from the raised deck. Then she uses that distance to prep lightning. You can see the red scratches on his head from her nails. Of course then Iroh grabs Azula's hand and drivers her lightning into the cliff. That is after Iroh has fought off the guards who were supposed to take him and Zuko prisoner. So Iroh's a boss that way. I would also make the argument that in the 6 vs 1 fight, Azula struck Iroh because he was distracted. The camera follows his sightline as he sees that Toph (who he just met on her own) is allied with the Avatar and his friends. So I would argue not only did distraction make Iroh a target, as well as Azula knows Zuko, taking out Iroh would distract Zuko from fighting her.

@@alharairah2214 yeah, Iroh is truly a beast. First we saw him defeating Zao's guards at the north pole (i hope i wrote his name right) and after that he cleared the whole Royal Guard of Azula (probably the strongest "regular" firebenders in ATLA universe). Iroh is skilled and he can definetly catch up with his techniques to Azulas agility. Because I think, that this is Irohs big disadvantage - not beeing able to dodge/run/endure long fights. But this is also the regular circle of life, the younger ones mostly superb the eldery :D

Raphael you call Zuko weak one more time . . . bro if you had to survive what he's been through, you would be dead. That boy has been through hell and he needs to scream at something. Even the storm ignores him like he's not worth anything. The other kids are laughing at the end, they have themselves, they have friends, they can work together. Zuko has nothing, everything always blows up in his face. All he has is Uncle and all the L's he's had since before the show even started. Him screaming isn't a joke, that boy is about ready to let the lighting end him and quit.

I like how you guys are really ok with Aang not getting Toph because it'd be to awkward, all the while Sokka has been stuck in there from midday to sunset 😅😂 Also, In that part for Zuko in the rain, I think he feels he'll never be able to prove his strong enough, and feels that the lighting represents all he has went through with his father, sister and life and that it doesn't even feel it's worth it to even acknowledge him at all unless it CAN hurt him.
