I love this song for a special reason: Director Imtiaz Ali has masterfully used this joyful song as a backdrop while the visual narrative shows that the heroine's dreams are shattered, she loses all her loved ones in one stroke, and once a bubbly girl loses all interest in life. IMHO the song was deliberately composed as thumri to convey the poignancy of the scene. When I close my eyes and listen to this song, I feel profound sadness in the voice that matches the story in the movie, despite the happy words. All in all, this song is a treat, as it is crafted by masters. Even the cinematography is sublime: As the last strains of the song fade away, a smooth long shot brings the characters from the traumatizing past to the present smoothly.

Rahul Sir, let me start from the end. Just listening to your recall of Rashid Bhai singing this song on the phone brought me to tears too. I’ve been blessed to hear him sing on stage ever since he was 18 and, in that sense, have been a devout witness to his phenomenal musical journey. The unique combo of passion and power is the hallmark of his singing - which you so aptly captured in your metaphor of a cascading waterfall. And that brings me to your rendition of this song. Your voice wraps itself around the song like a gentle moonlight river. Ustad Rashid Khan Saab and you have very different voices, very different musical personas. Which is why your rendition doesn’t sound like a cover even for a composed melody like this. It becomes a very different song with a very different feel, and an utterly beautiful one at that. I almost got reminded of two tandem songs - Khilte Hain Gul Yahan by Lata ji and Kishore da, and Jab Jab Bahaar Aayi by Lata ji and Rafi Saab. In each case, the two versions of the song are very different musical experiences woven on the same notes. Coming back to your rendition of Aaoge Jab Tum, all I can say is it takes a phenomenal talent to take a popular composition and turn it completely on its head by the sheer difference of touch and feel. I’m sharing two songs on the Manj Khamaj framework, both composed music. One’s in Bangla, the other’s in Hindi. It’ll be breathtaking to hear you interpret them.
