Excellent album, there are no words to describe this enormous piece of music. A singular tribute to a terrible moment in time, Eiger is a story of doomed mountaineers. There was, and is, no happy ending, no encouraging moral, no post-credits scene that suggests a sequel. Aara, in addition to stealing the crown of “First Band Alphabetically” - take that, Aardhvarkh! - plays a type of atmospheric black metal that is markedly more windswept and imposing than the typical atmospheric Black Metal group. The general strokes are the same: somber, chord-led songs interspersed with haunting solos and contrasting sequences of cutting and calm. If the midband of Black Metal is outwardly explosive, the midband of Atmospheric Black Metal is implosive, contained, like the soundtrack of a snowball. Aara stands out from the pack with crackling intensity. I'd say Eiger falls somewhere in the middle on the Venn diagram of, say, Paysage d'Hiver and Saor: cold and brooding enough to daze the Swiss, melodic and well-produced enough to satiate the Scots. We were all surprised by Eiger's musical production, its lush atmospheres, the incredible vocal range, the placid frozen winter riffs and the drums that give no respite to this tense winter blizzard where, after all, Mother Nature continues its own way. I am very happy to be on this ride with Aara. The last release with the leading track Heimgesucht cemented them as an all time favourtie band. This album while having that distinctive Aara sound is most certainly a different vibe. Even the cymbals sound Icy!! Everything has a certain cold harshness to it. Its fantastic production. Todesbiwak is getting me the most with the great composition, the use of the acoustic guitars is fantastic. Vocals great as always, never too much and always seem to be placed in a great spot. Thanks for all the work!! I will be buying most definitely.
