Virtuoso piece. You can't help realize how much of a genius Copeland is.

In the fast 2nd movement, I find some striking similarities to Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto, also for solo clarinet. Both works employ a jazz-flavored idiom with polychords and syncopated rhythms, and both works are scored for a smaller orchestra (no strings in the Ebony Concerto and strings and harp only in the Copland).

Nice having the score to see, but I'm not crazy about his performance, though I can recognize he's an elite clarinetist.

Because it is the pianist part.

So that the pianist playing from this part does not have to transpose when reading along with the clarinet part. Copland is allowing for the fact that there might be pianists who do not have experience reading transposing instruments.
