And people always get the overview of his career backwards: they think of the popular vernacular music as being his nominal style, and anything more "modern"-sounding as a departure. But it's exactly the reverse: the popular stuff was the mid-career departure. I love much of the popular stuff, but pieces like THIS are Copland's essence.
