I really don't understand his speech about "no one listened to this song." Everyone I knew listened and we loved it. He was in a huge influential band in the 90's and early 2000's. We all listened and loved his songs. If anybody wasn't listening before it was these country concert fans that he now panders to and regurgitates the same "emo" songs with a slide guitar and now they think he's great.
