Stood up for his beliefs and died for what?.....information. literally that's it. The doc had me in my feels at the end when his friends/family/colleagues spoke of him just trying not to break down. It showed me what a spirit he must have been to those that knew him.

Yes, Yes, Yes - we need more people like Aaron who's goals are altruistic not purely financial - well said Mr Swartz! The way Aaron was treated was disgraceful and unforgivable. Filthy lucre is what it was all about. Aaron was probably one of the least materialist people around.

Since when the access to knowledge is illegal in the "democratic" (so claimed ofcourse) USA?! And, since when the access to information is considered a theft, (when the knowledge is still there)?!
@JoesGLI4 жыл бұрын
Aaron was an outlier, couldn't and wouldn't fall in with the rank and file. Access to knowledge/information should be a basic human right. Not a means to profit from. It's so sad that the powers that be were so afraid of him that they sought to destroy his life. In his short time he was such a positive force, I can't help but wonder what he would have gone on to accomplish had he not left us so early in life.

The fact that Aaron Swartz took his own life makes it hard for a lot of people to see this with a clear head. It isn’t lost on me. But if Aaron’s goal was for “information to be free”, in this case, academic research, I don’t see how that basic impasse can’t be sorted out quite easily. The idea that a creator or in this case, an institution that commissioned a particular study owns and disposes of the fruits of said study should be in question then I am afraid that Aaron was just wrong on that point. Forget for a moment, I know that it’s difficult to do, the way this was prosecuted. I know the word “35 years” gets thrown around as if he was truly going to go to prison for that amount of time. No one believes that for a moment. But this is the problem I see in attempting to cast this “debate” as any kind of debate at all. You own the things that you produce and no one has the right to them, period. I own the fruits of my labor and if I ever find the cure for cancer, I would own that too and I could do with it what I would. You see, it isn’t an issue, IT’S THE ISSUE. Do the rights of the individual supersede the interests of the collective? I know there are instances where an individual’s rights are necessarily infringed for “the common good”. Imminent domain is one example. But in the case of intelectual property, even if it was the cure for cancer, no one has the right to that information because “you want it” or even because “people will benefit from it”. I promise you the day that the fruits of someone’s labor no longer belongs to them well that will be the day less intelectual work will be done. Property rights are human rights and if someone who “wants something really bad” can claim a right to it then so long society. Aaron Swartz was certainly a gifted computer engineer but the ethics of his crusade were flawed.Whether it be for money or otherwise, no one has claim on another person’s or in this case, an institution’s property.

It was research paid for by the government that Aaron believed should be free for the people, as they were the ones who had paid for it through taxes.

@@PawBrianmller I'm not insensitive to the public taxes argument. If I had my way, there would be none, or at least no compulsory income tax. But we don't live in a society when one man gets to decide what happens with information that strictly speaking it is not for him to acquire, dispose of or otherwise publish without the copyright holder's consent.
@Vecko-t8b8 ай бұрын
@@DoroteoVillaI agree with many points you made. However, sometimes, behind a paywall process can slow down progress of human kind. If you discover cancer treatment, cure, and hold it behind a paywall, what does that say in moral terms about you? Yes, you own it, but that just tells us who rules this world we live in. Many people will choose to have power and money over being altruistic. My point is that altruism and good moral doesnt equate to legal system we have now. Only way to change this is to make some altruistic things incorporated in our legal system. But that will never happen. Why? Because: 1) We are being ruled by people who want power and have that power. I am talking on wordly stage. Many psychopaths are rulers. For example, Henry Kissinger, who was a gray eminence, was a psycopath. He didnt care his decisions will kill millions. Later he ironically won Nobel prize for peace. These people rule us even today, some modern Kissingers. 2) People who have money, will pay people in power to do things that favor their financial plans. These plans will trump any altruism. 3) We are powerless to change this. People who try end up dead or losing either way. Our system is flawed, but it is how it is. Cant be changed because of rulers and those who rule them behind curtains. P.S. Your views are valid from legal standpoint. But there is this character from Victor Hugo's novel. He wa prosecuting a guy who stole a bread for years. He ruined his life almost. For a bread. Because he stole a bread. Later that guy figured out that his perfectionism for legal rules is immoral and killed himself by jumping into a river.

@Peesashit2845 жыл бұрын
They're talking about Aaron Schwartz a genius kid who was the co-founder of reddit and writer of RSS( the same RSS you see on so many websites.) He was arrested for sharing academic articles freely on the internet. Thede articles and journals are owned by a few big corporations and they charge millions in fees to Colleges for access. Aaron wanted to make them openly available to everyone because he believed information should be free. He hacked into MITs servers to do this. The companies sued but dropped charges later on. The attorney General still persisted in this case for status and precedent. And eventually Aaron killed himself because of the stress.
