Awesome Engine! have the previous release Tunnel Motors! I skipped these because Lionel included the FULL light package! By the time these units received speed lettering , they only had the nose mounted headlight and ditch lights. not he gyralights and red Mars light. Other than that the are AWESOME!

You don't have to remove that piece to program it. Pinch the front sides and pull up and away from the back it slides right off lol

I love the engine! I have a question... I,ve been noticing some Lionel Southern pacific SD40T-2 trains don't have those two lights in front of the locomotive. Is that a mistake? I want to get one with those two lights in front, but I just find SD40T-2 southern pacific without them 🥺

Those are the ditch lights. Lionel decided to either have them or not as road specific detail for certain units. The black widow fantasy scheme and the kodachrome are one of those without the ditch lights. I also know the older releases (about 2017) didn't have them.
