Yup, I'm not even American and I can relate. I worked less than 2 months by the end of 2023 and that was three different jobs where I passed. One was three days and it was bullshit, one was three weeks (high pay but bs too) and then my current job which quite frankly is the best of them all. Probably not getting fired because of how desperate those people are. I'm already in the process of getting tf away from that job, but hey it was a good one except the pay is shit. Most people would wish they had coworkers like that.

I had a company call me a year later, they hired me. It was a total disaster. The dude didn't even train me, there were several items that required 2 people to build and they had me do it myself. When payday came, I was supposed to have direct deposit but the manager didn't set it up so I had to wait for a physical check to come. They didn't tell me the checks come on the supply truck, the same supply truck that was 2 days late and had to be fully unloaded before they could get to the box containing such checks. The same supply truck that not only was late but had the wrong box and I had to wait an extra week for. This is a rather large company too. High end vendor. Like $3800.00 outdoor porch chairs levels of high end. And this was around 2016

So...fake positions are a prerequisite to justify the H1-B visa abuse. Step 1: Create a bunch of fake positions that no one has qualifications for, keep them open for months. Step 2: File paperwork with the government claiming you have X jobs that Americans can't do (Govt doesn't check to see if reqs are even POSSIBLE) Step 3: Company receives H1B visas that for some reason ALL go to the same town in India where the Boss originally came from. Step 4: Boss extorts money from the visa holders for a portion of their wages. Step 5: Sometimes the COMPANY gets caught in wrongdoing so they pay the fines with corporate income, boss is isolated, and not disciplined.

In the eyes of the corporate C-suite mafia for the last 25 years or so there's been a shortage of 22 year old devs/engineers/whatever with 7-10 years experience in 5-7 year old technology (yes, you read that correctly) who are willing to work 50 hrs/week for burger flipping wages. There has never been a real shortage of skilled professionals, the Indians were never needed, and Sanjay and Kumar don't have to have the same skill level as Americans do because the former are more "fiscally" qualified--the only metric the execs care about. The "shortage" has always been industry lobbying group (ITAA) propaganda. Job numbers != jobs. Notice the media only speaks of jobs, job postings, and job numbers; they don't say X number of people were hired in the State, only that there are Y number of jobs posted/available. The larger companies are also in collusion with the State for their mutual benefit: the companies on the left pay less in unemployment taxes, the State on the right can boast about high numbers of jobs posted, while job seekers stuck in the middle are screwed.

I dedicated some time to this. Job postings can be a tax deductible in Germany. You can pay up to 30K for an "advertisement" on a site that belongs to you or a friend and create a tax loop, basically paying yourself and writing this off as an ad campaign. Many "recruiting events" are hosted by friends, venues or are elaborated scemes to legally launder money. It is a deep , deep rabbithole of crookery and incompetence.

This has been going on for a long time. In the 80s and 90s the "temporary services" and "staffing" would run 10 ads for months for 1 job that would be filled the same day and when you called or interviewed they would act like they still had plenty of jobs so they could get you to work at other places or just to keep people on the books.

I wish I'd heard your advice when I was a teenager. When I got my MBA, I'd been told it stood for "Millions and Billions Award". A joke, obviously, but I believed the message. What a crock of shit. While the accounting classes were useful, most of what I "learned" was garbage, some of it propaganda. For example, I learned about "perfect markets" (their term). You can't fool the stock market, they said. The stock price reflects all future profits discounted to the net present value using the current rate of interest. Utter bullshit. How many bubbles have inflated and burst in that time since? College, for most, is not just a waste of money, not just a waste of time but a waste of the most previous time in your life, your 18-25 years where the decisions you make can echo for the rest of your life. Time not only has value but your youth has more value than your old age. Unfortunately, in my mid-50s, I'm in the "wrap it up" phase of life, when I've learned too late how much I was lied to.
@WTHenry2023
@WTHenry2023 3 ай бұрын
Yep brother, I received my Millions and Billions Award too. What they didn't explain is that the schools are the ones making the millions and billions. Agreed that accounting was the only useful courses. My company paid for my executive MBA but it was two years out of my prime where all I did was work and go to school. I could have better spent that time taking the few courses (such as accounting) which helped my career and also spending more time with friends, family and hobbies (which makes life worth living). It is part of the educational-industrial complex and is a mirage. My first clue was all the job postings that said bachelors required/MBA preferred (but not necessary).

Yes Cappy, I have noticed the same dystopia that have taken over the job market and the mating market. Women now try to keep lots of orbiters around so that they can always call one whenever The Wall hits; similarly, employers try to keep up a big list of potential employees so that they can hire a replacement when one of their own leaves. Getting a callback on a job application now seems to be as low probability as having some chick on Tinder respond. At some point workers/men figure out that life is a just a stupid game, and so they Go Galt on everything.

Once I as a regular Joe made a Craigslist ad that was fake hiring for the job I wanted but hadn’t got for four years. I kept it up for 3 days just to see my competition and why I wasn’t getting offers. This later led to me changing careers because of how insanely outgunned I was tbh, but as I did it I felt guilty that people would apply to a job that doesn’t exist so I kept it as non time-consuming as possible. Shame that these HR reps don’t feel the same.

I stopped dealing with staffing agencies back in the 1990s. @hollowgonzalo4329

So basically in order to get an accurate picture of the current job market you have to take the post revising figures from months back and then reduce that even further by about 45% or so to get a realistic number for how many job's are available/being created. Then factor in how many that were left are part time vs full time because the end result will be even bleaker after that. The economy is fucked just like it was back in 08/09 but because there hasn't been stock crash yet they think that nobody will notice if they just get Pravda to spit out random bullshit numbers to the population.

That’s just it. The posts are intentionally fake because the companies have no money. They can’t actually afford to fill even half of their vacancies. They just post these ghost posts to help keep the overworked staff’s morale a little higher. “Don’t worry guys, we’re hiring, help is on the way! Just give us a couple months.” It’s also a last ditch effort to signal to Wall Street they’re more profitable than they really are. “No, please don’t dump our stock investors, look see? We’re profitable, we just put out a ton of ads that we’re hiring.” It’s all theater.

Gaslighting. Apply for a job at one of the guilty parties and give them long run arounds. Fake applications for jobs is a good way to return the favor. Demorazation campaigns don't have to be one sided. I bet an AI could be made that does this at scale. Could potentially force in person interviews to verify actual human existence. The AI might gaslight them into paying more for real employees.

Edited 2024-07-04: I'd bet a paycheck that the fake job posting rate across the board is > 70%. For specific industries where you have more games going on, e.g., I.T., the rate is easily 80% and has been so for some 15 years or so. They're also playing a couple of other games: 1. The larger companies are also in collusion with the State for their mutual benefit: at one end the companies that are required to pay UI taxes to the States pay less, at the other end the State can boast about high numbers of jobs posted, while job seekers stuck in the middle are screwed. 2. Companies also make $$$ selling job seekers' data. For example, per documents obtained via FOIA requests, Tyson Foods makes $20 million *a month* doing this.

It is just the HR departments trying to justify their position and the people in HR who actually can’t get jobs anywhere else. They make work to show how productive they are to justify their pay and the people who are stacked in there. Bureaucracy at its purest.

The company my wife works for does this. Couple times I’ve told people to apply for entry level technician jobs that were posted on their website, I knew they met the posted qualifications, but they never even got a phone call. I don’t refer people there any more. Then at the Christmas party the owner tells me they can’t find people.

I tried to Apply for an apprenticeship 15:28 with the Elevator Technician union Local 3 back when I was in my twenties during the 2000’s in StL. They made me bring a $35 cashier’s check and my high school diploma. I made a mistake bringing my liberal arts Associate Degree which was a mistake because they put on list at #26 and never called me back after over a year so I called them back and canceled my application. What cracks me up now is the Union protected the Baby Boomer’s so much that now the younger generations have been told the Unions aren’t hiring unless you know someone in the Union plus no one wants to work hard in these new generations. Unions got so picky no one is bothering to apply with them anymore plus globalization and Corporate Greed has made Unions absolutely useless today.

Ghost jobs are also an effort to boost stock price. "See, we're doing well, we're hiring! Ignore the bottom line being in the red..." After 26 years continuous employment through 5 different companies, I was downsized last summer [company I worked for was bought out, and the new company already had a guy like me working for them]. Nothing but rejections and silence. And I had companies chasing me for the most part until about 3 years ago. It's bad out there.

Talk to a mechanical engineer, but I'm fairly sure that he could put together a reasonably simple hoisting system, a few pulleys and ropes, that would eliminate the need for that kind of exertion. It's medieval level technology, if even that. I imagine that a freshman could handle that project, with ease. Your boss just didn't care enough about his own staff to look into that. Cars can be lifted with muscle power and a few pulleys, without anybody being maimed.

These are not all ghost jobs, they are just ghost jobs for white males. My twin sister and I both graduated last year with the same bachelors and had both been applying for the exact same jobs. She had a 75 percent call back rate within a week of applying and I have not had a single call back. She got a job after 3 weeks of looking with multiple interviews and it's very well paying with great work life balance, I have not had a single interview and have pretty much given up looking. I am happy for my sister as she is one of my best friends but at the same it has made me feel very discouraged. Honestly it's very similar to the differences between me and my sisters tinder account, she has what seems like an unlimited amount of options and I have very little to none.

As a chemical engineer, it's brutal. During my 6th interview with a glass manufacturer, they said "Wait, you don't have any experience in the automotive industry? We're really looking for someone with that kind of experience", and they ended the interview right then and there. I'm in the middle of interviewing for another place right now, literally the exact same role as my current job, just at a different place. Had to do 3 interviews with the recruitment agency. Then 3 interviews with the hiring manager (based in Cali). Then 2 interviews on-site. Then they had me make a lengthy technical presentation (took me ~30 hours) and give the presentation. Now they keep calling me back to give the presentation to different groups. Funny thing is, the recruiter told me they've been trying to hire for this role for 8 months. The hiring manager said "it's a brand new position". Meanwhile we've spent 2 months playing this game where I basically have 2 full-time jobs and I don't even work for them. Also, btw, don't go into chemical engineering. Statistically about 80 openings per year, nationwide, but relocation costs are so high that companies can't afford to hire anyone that's not local. It's also one of the only engineering disciplines that you can't do remotely.
