I Fitted A REAL Carbon Fiber Roof! Ford Escort RS Turbo

So rust repairs are a big problem with old classic Fords especially Rs turbos/cosworths, welding addresses this, but today we are fully removing all the rust in the roof but completely removing it and replacing it with real Carbon fibre. Enjoy

What a chap! I remember loving these cars as a kid in the 90s. I love coming across people that are in to the same cars as me....especially 90s vaux and Ford hatches/ saloons. You probably get a lot of hate for tracking an old RS, but you keep the outside of the car really clean, with tasteful/functional mods. I really rate your work. Fantastic to see a sickk carbon roof, on what would otherwise be a shell that's scrap. Keep the decent looking motors alive! And functional. Wish I had the same skills you have! Your a legend! This is painful to watch but I understand its completely necessary. My old mk3 1.6 Ghia had a sunroof and it went rusty in the same place. Also the battery tray area was a common spot on the mk3 and mk4.

I've got a mate who's dad is also rebuilding a mk4 escort, he is full on rebuilding it, it Has been full on stripped repainted and atm it's a rolling shell, but he's ordered a new engine block, can't wait to see the thing driving

did you source the bonding yourself or did the roof suppliers send it? only reason i ask is you should have put a silicon primer on the remains of the old roof panel first (same stuff they put on panels before they put windscreen sealer on)...i think you said you prepped/keyed up the remains of the roof panel so should be ok, just with that silicone primer you would have got a much better bond between the steel and carbon,, obviously cant do much about it now

Love the project and the vids! The roof looks good but shouldn't you have removed the paint so that the bond was formed between the carbon and the remaining steel part of the roof? Now the carbon roof is effectively only held on by the strength of the paint underneath it, does it make any difference?

Thanks David! the way its done is cutting crisscrossing with a tool that takes it down to bare metal, then the bond goes over the top of that, you cant sand the whole roof back to metal it will rust very quickly which will lose strength

Completely agree on not fitting the pillar trims, they don't even look good and they're purely for aesthetic purposes?! It does seem odd chopping the roof out but the end result is fantastic. Are you concerned about the roof going brittle when exposed sunshine over a period of time (seems to be mixed opinions on how UV effects carbon fibre and the resins). Can't wait to see the interior fully painted. Great work keep it up.

Yes exactly! No purpose there not needed. The resin is Uv protected but we shall see how it goes. Probably cover it in summer.

Carbon delaminates and on certain cars has gone soggy brittle and not what you want in a proper bang , I don't think the average mush with a rs turbo thinks that far ahead , I don't know why these videos pop up on my feed as I have a escort cosworth and I'd never chonker around with a roof

My rs was the same, brake hard and your head would get covered in rust, I ended up with stripping out the xr3efi that I had to use the good shell, apparently those were built in Germany so didn't rust the same.
