Never tell Google anything you don’t have to. Don’t pick a campaign goal. Set up one primary conversion with last-click attribution. Never use performance max. Never use broad match keywords. Always add negative keywords. Pay zero attention to the optimization score. And never answer emails from their “reps” who are really salespeople who don’t actually work at Google.

@@lpatterson5005 For any service business targeting a local area, run a search campaign (not smart campaign) with only exact and phrase match keywords. Negative keywords prevent your ad from showing if it’s part of someone’s query. A negative keyword of “free” would keep your ad from showing for “free hot tubs” even if you had “hot tubs” as a phrase match keyword, which otherwise would match to that query. You might use other negative keywords like “phone number” or “customer service” for people looking for the manufacturers of any items you sell or install. You don’t need your ad showing up for that or people will call thinking that you are that manufacturer if use their names as keywords. (But don’t use any trademarked names in your ad copy.) You might also consider a Local Services Ads campaign to run in parallel but need to set that up in Google My Business.

​@@lpatterson5005If your hot tub business is available anytime (the customer can just click the date & time) you can select e-commerce or sales as a target. Otherwise if they have to talk to you to know which bathtub and they need time to discuss or you'll have to call them back to confirm, getting leads sounds better... Getting leads mean you'll get their email & phone, which you can keep for the next campaign as a return customer segment. Sales is more like Amazon click & buy Negative keywords means the keywords that you don't want your ad to appear. It's at the next tab, after you put in the keywords.

Great Content! I have two questions. 1. When I follow the same steps I only have the option for Performance Max in the campaign Type. Is there a setting I need to change so I have the other options? 2. Do you have any tutorials on how to maximize ads for Google maps or google my business? I have a retail location and want to create ads that show up in maps, but haven't found a good example of how to do so / am a little unclear on how the ads relate to google map searches. Better to create separate campaigns for each product and also it depends on your customers persona, because you need to use different keywords
