I'm 70 and just downsized from a 3br home in the woods to a new, bright 1 br apartment. Both my kids live in cold winter climates, which I detest, but I sure wish I could be near one of them as I (presumably) continue to age. The ADU is spectacular!

She passed in a beautiful peaceful prayerful setting at her Board & Care home suite, embraced by love, singing and praying voices of her priest, her kids and her best friend. But she did not die here, at home, with me! 😢💔 That last line of the video, moved me to balling tears. 😂

At 73, THIS is the way to go if you can no longer have a home. I don't want to be in a nursing home or senior citizen apartment, BUT I don't want to live with my children either. Like Karin, I don't cook much. I live on carry-out & frozen meals. When I do cook I plan ahead. Example a pot of white chili turns out three to five meals for myself. One sweet onion per month, a dozen eggs per 6 weeks, a loaf of bread has lasted as much as 6 months via the freezer. I use the microwave daily, the range top maybe once a month. The oven ONLY 6 times in a year. As a widow, cooking holds no interest anymore. This daughter, Monique, & her dear, dear husband doing this for Karin was marvelous. Who knows, eventually they may have a grown child living in the glama garage, or even they might move in there, when their grown child takes over the LA house. Pierre & partner did a wonderful job of staying to size, yet giving her the independence she needs to remain content. BRAVO, bravo.

Bless you AARP! I got goosebumps and tears from this story🙂🙂 I have a beautiful two stall garage from 1955 with beautiful framing and southern exposure. I live by myself in a tiny 2 bedroom. I hope to create an ADU from my garage with bath, bed, and living room, and I would share the kitchen with my renter. Money is tight, so wish me luck. Why doesn't AARP lobby for an ADU subsidy program to aid retirees? Just a suggestion🙂🙂💯💯❤️❤️
