would it be correct to say when working out avco, you need to work out the average unit cost following every receipt?

Very close so you’ll need to calculate the average unit cost just before each issue. Now if there hasn’t been any further receipts since the last issue the unit cost will remain the same as the previous issue however if there has been a further receipt this will change your average unit cost and therefore will need calculating again.
