To calculate addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Before Abacus, human beings were used to count fingers, toes and pebbles. Abacus was invented between 2700 BC and 2200BC. Evolution of computers .

Many people argue that it's good for synchronising psychomotor and cognitive aspects of kids but I don't think so. It prevents kids to think creatively which is the goal at the primary level. Which could result in learning hindrances during higher studies. More research needed on use of abacus and even chiroban technique.
