Join us this week on Aboard Mermaid Monster as we show you what 5 days underway at sea looks like. We share the ups and downs we experience while out on the open ocean. In this episode we are about half way done with our long voyage. We give you a in depth tour of our pilothouse, aka Mission control and explain what all of our electronics do. We also let you in on parenting at sea, the emotions we feel and really just try to give you a real life view on what living on a boat really looks like. If you are new here, then welcome. We are the Palmer family. We have lived on our Nordhavn trawler, Mermaid Monster for about three years now. We have covered over 10k miles with no plans on stopping. Join us each Sunday for a brand new episode posted at 9am Eastern Time! Don’t forget to like, subscribe and leave a comment below! We love hearing from you.

Keep those kids on the boat as long as you can! You are giving them riches they will appreciate in their later years. As one born and raised on our family boat I can tell you the boating childhood is far superior to landlocked kids and all the trash that goes with it. You are giving them a life lasting gift of experiences!

I worked for three weeks offshore of Galveston, Texas, on a 65 foot shrimp trawler. We never saw land for three weeks, and never stopped pulling the nets except when emptying them of shrimp, and whatever else we caught. As we threw shrimp trash, small fish, etc. off the boat the porpoise would follow the back of the boat looking for easy food. The porpoise would jump out of the air, do flips and spins, just like you see in Sea World. I previously thought they were trained to do these "tricks", but it must be natural play time to them. This was a very interesting and entertaining episode. I see Branden has a dry sense of humor. I like it. Thanks for taking time for "us".

You simply make my Sunday mornings special. Thank you!! FYI…. dolphins are an extremely social animal. They have many reasons to “follow” a boat in motion. First being food. They’ve learned humans on boats will normally discard food overboard, especially fishing trawlers and being your boat has a deep draft, the vibrations it creates mimics a fishing trawler. They also use the boats wake to help them along their way. They use less energy by “surfing”. As I stated, they’re extremely intelligent animals and as such enjoy “playtime” and revel in “showing off”!! It gives them the opportunity to strut their stuff among other members of the pod and as such, you get to enjoy their majesty!! Tell Braden he was right on point about his ships hull theory. I find it amazing how the vibration generated attracts such a beautiful animal. Be safe and much ❤️. PS…. You should have told him Captain was at the helm!! 😉

Oh, as for communication you might want to look into Starlink. Not sure if they have a domed antenna yet but I heard they were working on it. The current equipment package is $500 and another $100 a month for access. But you will get phone on internet t.v. and all other internet services.

Braden, add to your electronics "wish list" a KVH satellite internet dome. That will help with the "stir crazies" on extended passages like this and also let you get updated weather information more often. Plus it would add in another communications channel in case you need to get in touch with people. Your helm instrumentation has almost the level of redundancy of the new Bering yachts I've seen reviews on, too bad their SMALLEST boat is over 70 feet, and several million bucks!

Does anyone know what a KVH cost for the service each month. 💭
@briand.4427
@briand.4427 3 жыл бұрын
@@tripplefivedistribution3850 several hundred per month for bare bones service to receive small files to 10’s of thousands per month for speeds that on land would be considered slow. I’m holding out for Starlink’s Mobile service, hopefully, sometime in 2022! Single antennae with a flat, monthly rate for 100mb service. It’s going to cause the existing sat com services to change their business model or go under.

@@briand.4427 Agreed. When I think of all the offshore satellite service companies today (KVH, Dish, Viasat, etc), I can't even begin to imagine how much they must be fretting over the growth of the Starlink constellation. With the new Gen2 laser-interconnected sats starting to go up and a roster of new receivers planned for ships, airplanes, etc, I suspect about this time next year when we see service contracts for the traditional companies fall off a cliff.

Braden as you probably already know the duckbill valves are just a one way valve. On our boat we removed them and replaced them with an inline one way valve that you can purchase in the hardware store plumbing department. I have no idea how much bigger your system is than ours but we also have a screen that catches all that hair. We clean it out once a week. Safe journeys!

Braden first of all the Rod and reel set-up you have is called an overhead, which means the reel is on the top of the rod . You could brake the rod using it the other way around. My suggestion is for you to watch some utube about trolling lures and different types of lures. The fishing will take care of itself after that.

Radar range = square root of the number of feet radar from waterline X 1.56 (if I remember right). Good news is you take same formula for your target. So freighter might show up at long distance but not a padddle boarder. keep up the great cruising lifestyle. Loooking forward to episode of moving from Newport to prep for hurricane.

What is the attraction of a boat to Dolphins ? Why are they drawn to the bow ? I might conclude that the attraction might have to do with churning up the water and their food but i really don't think so. What then is the "magic" of a boat ? Do they hope the owners will feed them ?

There are many times I'd have given a kidney for a forward-looking sonar. When dealing with shifting or uncertain bottom it can be invaluable if used correctly and can keep you from needing a tow or other assistance. Yes, it is necessary to be at low speed, but that was the expectation when it was developed. It can give you just enough time for full reverse to keep you out of trouble. If you plan on going further afield, keep it. You have a nice bridge, really. From a supportability point of view a lot of the Furuno stuff needs replaced and Garmin in their infinite wisdom doesn't support the sonar well. But, functionally, you have a nice setup. There are vessels I worked on for years and never touched the wheel on the bridge. Everything was through the autopilot or jog stick. A Stabilized dish would help with internet access and boredom. Long passages can get boooooooring..... Been there done that. :-D

CB has most of the same limitations as a VHF radio, they're both line of sight communications. However, you CAN get skip effects with CB more often than with VHF increasing your range. For both radio systems you can increase your effective range by mounting the antenna as high as possible on the mast.

Well again with the fishing. Never ever aim the eyes of the rod towards the sea while trolling or reeling a fish in or ever. The eyes are just guides for the line. They have no real strength and they can get ripped off the rod. Oh take the clicker off the rod when letting out line or reeling the line in. The clicker should only be on when your line is out and you set it in the rod hold. Good luck on your next fishing attempt.
