ABANDONED A&P Grocery Store

Good one! Surprised this building is still standing. It’s a definite safety hazard for the city. That’s a big piece of property for residential development.

So, it's a very interesting site. It was approved for mixed use retail / residential development in May 2021. It was supposed to have 75 residential units with street level retail. There have been no updates that I can find since then, which is now almost 3 years ago.

I remember going in there as a kid with my parents and my grandfather. I would walk there with my grandfather and we would get cookies. Then the A&P moved to their new site on Raritan Road around 2004, of course now it’s ACME. The building has been vacant for like 20 years nothing new ever went in there. The owners claim that A&P was still paying the lease on the building after relocating (presumably to keep another grocery store from operating at that location). Then A&P went bankrupt and the property reverted back to the owners. Until recently there has been a lot struggle to find a buyer for the property.

Looking on Zillow…I can’t believe how expensive an old little tiny house costs in that town and the property taxes! Obviously it’s like that because of proximity to NYC, but WOW! 😮

Shopped at Foodtown all the time. It was a convenient location. Surprised the town has let it get so bad.
