I understand your eagerness to get it going, but unless you are an A&P and have a hangar to do an annual inspection in you are risking losing stuff disassembling everything right there on the ramp. It most likely will eventually need the engine gone through. Even if it starts It may not be reliable. Camshafts, lifters, and stuff tend to corrode when airplanes sit that long. Vacuum pumps, starters, and gyros deteriorate as well. It’s is neat that you got an abandoned airplane just stay safe and good luck.
@chuckhiggins15 Жыл бұрын
This A&P IA would not hesitate to buy or obtaine these aircraft. IF the log book and some matenance are present, good. A total teardown disassembly inspection should be happen. The parts, etc, manuals are still available, looks like a Cessna, What ever you $$ for purchased, A BUY, A value, restore to Air Worthy. $110,00 BILLS. Don't run the engine, inspect for corrosion , that can chew bearings up quickly. You NEED an A&P or kill the

I don't know your experience level, but I hope you got all of the books and inspection with it, I here it takes awhile for the FAA to go thru every thing to ok it for flying again. I would work with an A&P inspector to make sure everything is right. Also I would strip everything out of the airplane, to do an inspection. Just because it's shiny and new on the outside doesn't mean everything is ok underneath. Next I would pull all of the plugs and drench the inside of the cylinders & bore scope them. Lastly an oil change and grease all fittings. before I would do any thing.
@mattivirta Жыл бұрын
not need ALL, only poroscope cylinders, logbook have hours, and checking frame corrosions, not matter all other, lot can repair in home, paint,exhaus other than frame corrosions, not lot work.

@Daybreakaviation Жыл бұрын

@blimpcommander1337 Жыл бұрын
Unless it has been treated with something I can only imagine that inside the wings have a ton of corrosion as I have never seen a cowling completely corroded through, before. I somehow imagine the corrosion was the reason the last annual wasn’t completed.

Did you pull all the plugs and put penetrating oil in them? Also try to turn the motor over without the plugs so there is not any compression.
@chuckhiggins15 Жыл бұрын
This A&P never would oil the plugs. Clean out carbon junk, gap the contacts, check the ( ohms ) resistance with a meter. You shade tree mechs bother this A&P. End this.

horrendous money pit. might as well just get to the corrosion first, then get a new engine from Lycoming and this time get a ported and polished one, they have nice nifty chrome valve covers.

True, FAA regulations, An owner cannot disassemble an aircraft part. ? google FAA and get the details what an owner can work on HIS aircraft. A lot of items or inspection are listed. However, "TEAR down is not permitted. A&PIA.

This A&P agrees, corrosion has destroyed the bearings, journals, cams, etc. moisture is there. an aircraft engine is "open " and as cooling air condenses in exhaust system corrosion can form. Vehicle engines are " closed ", carburator, exhaust , prevent condensation form. $18,ooo. Bye guys.
