Ah yes, my whole childhood of spending hours upon hours looking for that one movie they never had. A huge part of our recent culture, and one of the most spectacular modern bankruptcies, Blockbuster was the best.

Well, in my opinion, especially towards the last few years, the stores I went to developed different renting rules as time passed, trying to squeeze more profit from customers, which was at least partially achieved with that complexity. And, more than once I firmly believed I was charged an unjust late fee - when I rented and returned multiple movies all on the same days, but wasn't credited as having done so. Finally, the lines got long, popular movies and games were out, employees became rude, and prices went up. Mostly though, BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE killed Blockbuster.

A bit like the story of the undertaker, that had a competitor whose wife worked at the telephone switchboard. She routed call's to his business to her husbands funeral business. That made him so cross, that he invented the automatic switchboard, effectively killing off a whole trade of switch operators. I bet, that lady, was not well liked among her colleagues when they found out, her actions was indirectly what cost them, their jobs.

Family Video was lightyears better than Blockbuster. Porn and Unrated/NC-17 editions plus lots of of weirder films (The EVIL DEAD movies were out of print for most of the 90s and Blockbuster didn't have them usually because they weren't rated) made it THE go-to for me.

Licensing deals exists, so you can’t expect every movie to be on Netflix. Even if you have to get Disney+, HBO Max, Prime Video, and/or Apple TV+ to see that one movie, it’s still cheaper and better than getting multiple cable TV packages. If you still want a movie that bad and it’s not on any of the aforementioned streaming services, then just rent or buy it somewhere else, digital or physical. Amazon, Ebay, Google Movies + TV etc

Nope. That wasn't it. It's simply the fact that when you are offered cheaper alternatives, without the late fees, you'd go for it. That and that if you actually browsed a Blu-Ray section of a physical store, chances are they'd be more worth it to buy and keep than to simply rent for a week. That's the case here in Australia with JB HI-FI. You come and look at the new gadgets, TVs and so forth, but end up buying a couple of Blu-Rays instead.

I don't think people realize this but the feeling of listening to the radio, waiting for your favorite song to come on was the same one as walking into a Toys R Us or Blockbuster. There was no instant gratification back then. It may have taken hours but once your song finally played, it was the greatest feeling in the world and it never sounded better. Now, we have any movie, any song, any toy at our finger tips and can be delivered in seconds without leaving your house. Convenience? Absolutely. Better? Not so sure.

I had no idea so many other 90's kids had the family-movie-night tradition on Friday nights. Our family tradition was to always go to the local pizza place (Round Table Pizza) and then go two doors down to "Video Flicks" to rent a movie. Every. Friday. Night. We did that for many years. It was sad to see it empty after it closed. It's fascinating how times change and different generations share their nostalgia from their childhoods.

I was a employee from 2003 - 2011, bad decision making, when direct Tv bought them out they kept the same board of directors that continued the same bad decision making. They also tried to upstart gamestop which didnt do too badly until they put a bunch of marketers in charge of gaming instead of actual gamers. Bad game recommendations mounted and mounted just served as one more nail in the coffin. I worked between 2 stores in Indianapolis IN. Store 18527 on 56th and Georgetown if anyone cares. My store went out of business and less than 3 yrs later it became an O'Riley auto parts store, and the other store i believe became a Mattress outlet.

Sadly I was born too late to experience Blockbuster, but there was always a location near me that was untouched. They had taken down the sign and the store was clearly boarded off and shut, but they still had posters in the windows. It was kinda sad to just watch the store decay, knowing I was never able to visit it, until about 2016 when it got refurbished into a new store. Oh well, at least I have hmv.

@@LiquidusSnakeX To each there own my fellow commenter. Just like the original commenter said i miss going to these stores. Every time a new copany offers something that people don't even have to leave there house for makes more people lazier and lazier even though there are a very select few groups of people that it would benefit. As a younger person as in myself (31, almost 32) i enjoy going out in the world instead of being a recluse in this world. Sad thing is to that the more and more services that people don't have to go out for social skills will really be lacking which is the really sad part. Im really hoping that before i die the U.S. does not become a wasteland of people barely or never going anywhere because they are to lazy to leave there perfect little fortress of solitude.

It's funny because as I was watching this I was thinking, "Man, I'm only 27 and I can already think of so many things that existed during my childhood that my future kids will never get to experience." That feeling of Mom picking you up from school on Friday, taking you to Blockbuster to pick out a few movies, then going home and getting a pizza to eat in the living room while watching them. It's also a total coincidence that earlier today I happened to come across an article about the Sea World they had here in Ohio. I had TOTALLY forgotten that there was ever a Sea World here (it closed when I was 10), but reading the article brought back very distinct, long forgotten memories of sitting inside the pavilion-type enclosure where Shamu's tank was and watching the show, as well as watching the water skiers perform on the lake. Now the hardcore liberals have forced Sea World to end their killer whale shows, meaning another experience from my childhood has been to added to the list of things that will never be experienced by my children. I suppose this happens to every generation eventually, but I feel like the digital age and the rapid rise of technology, combined with the extremist-levels of political correctness in today's society has killed off SO MANY things we had as kids in just the past 10-15 years. Do you remember watching Ren and Stimpy or Rocko's Modern Life cartoons as a kid? Can you imagine shows like that being made for kids today? The outrage would be so strong that they would IMMEDIATELY be cancelled with an apology from everyone involved in making and airing the show. Hell, I still remember having to go to the library to use a computer for school work. Now 10 year-old kids have fucking smart phones (although I will NEVER let my kids become cell-phone zombies, ESPECIALLY not before they even hit their teens). If we wanted to listen to music, we used a freakin' boom box to listen to the radio, or had to convince our parents to buy us a new cassette or CD. Now any song you want to hear is available for free on KZbin. The times, they are a-changin'.

So. Basically Blockbuster is dead because they overcharged a guy for late fees on a movie and he decided to found Netflix and kill blockbuster

That same guy went to them and offered to run their online store if they gave him the capital to do his online video thing which would have been Blockbuster property but they turned him down and within a decade were outcompeted and brought down to eventual bankruptcy.

If blockbuster had made a serious Online Streaming service around 2010 they might have actually had a chance because people had fond memories of the name. However they didn’t so there is that...

They had a mailing service and you could bring your movies to the store/swap them out for instore rentals. It COULD have been better than Netflix. They also did video streaming. Just a few dumb business moves.

Watching videos about the end of blockbuster is always bittersweet. I work at blockbuster for the last 5 years it was in existence. It was a really sad time. It was such a fun job and met a ton of great people. I loved working there and get sad every time i see the chipotle that now sits on the site of my last store

I remember walking in block busters and picking out a great video for the evening. Just seeing people doing the same. Was really nice to see. I can still feel the excitement walking in and seeing all the choices. I miss that feeling. Internet killed alot of nice things. Thank you block busters for the great memories. I will not pay cable to watch even TV. I have a DVD player and I go to the local library to get my dvd's, and it's free. Sorry, not paying to make some company get rich.

7:47 Idk how I somehow recognised this as Oakville despite NEVER having been to this leg of the Bronte area, but it definitely is that. I initially thought it was the plaza on Postridge way up north east, but somehow I was still right on the town. It's so surreal seeing places I've actually lived and frequented in your videos. :p

Jswave 34 I remember when I was little like, 5 (I was born in 04), I rented videos and games all the time with my older siblings. So I only knew it when it was on the verge of death. We actually have about 3 games we “stole” from Blockbuster, Mariokart Wii, some kind of Disneyland Kinect game, and a GameCube game or something.
