The accidental finds are the best ones. Loved the old range cookers and I think the first little outhouse thing you went in was possibly a laundry room? You made me giggle all the way through again, the way you keep trippin n that and when you saw that spider I nearly peed my pants ha ha. Dig the boots as well, a very well dressed urban explorer indeed! 😜

I'm just guessing, those big kettles in the "kitchen" might've been to boil fruit to make jam; and those stoves were amazing! I'll bet the buildings were all over a hundred years old (and the property hundreds). Not many places in the US like this, they've mostly been paved over or replaced with tacky buildings or bought up and incorporated by massive "factory farms". When you say 'not much to see' I think "No! It's precious beyond words!" (IMO). Thanks so much for showing it!
@TracyExplores7 жыл бұрын
Brian Karcher thank you, I love the old buildings so it's a lot for me to see just not everyone shares my love for them, I wish they could be restored rather than be left to crumble.

Dont be afraid to linger a little bit on the details such as the old fireplaces and ranges and shelves, window shutters etc and focus on them for a minute. It is those details that enable us to make something of a connection with the people who lived there. Seeing the oven we can imagine putting a pie in to cook. Seeing where someone put their hand to close and latch the shutters for the night we can imagine doing the same. Looking out of a window we see elements of the view they saw so many years ago. Its an evocative visit anyway but that would make it a little more so. Imagine how hard the women would have worked from early morning in that washhouse? They probably had to make their own soap in the early years. Pouring water through wood ash to make lye and then combining it with tallow or other fats. If they were lucky they might have been able to scent it with Rosemary to make it slightly more pleasant to use. They would have been in there from dawn to fetch water and fill the coppers then make fires under them to start to heat water. The clothes would have been filthy from farm work and every garment would have had to be scrubbed by hand. One can only hope they had someone to fetch wood and chop it up for them so they didnt have to do that too.

Sarah Strong: That's luxury that is - we lived in a brown paper bag with a chuffin' big hole in it; no running water, no heating, no electricity; on a windy day we would wake up homeless...
@sarahstrong71746 жыл бұрын
Chaz Walker Aye, I remember it well, them days was hard, living in paper bags. Todays generation have no idea. But at least you had fresh air in your paper bag. Our paper bag was at bottom of lake! Mother could never get the mud out of the carpets. Well, when I say carpets, what I mean was, well we couldnt afford real carpet of course. Mother used to beg at the back doors of the rich to get the servants to let her look through the bins for any old scraps of aristocratic belly button fluff. It was our only comfort.
