Matt, it is so refreshing to see a KZbinr that knows his craft and trade. I just about vomit when I see other channels that call their selves building channels and I cringe at the work they are doing. And then you have the DIY'er doing them same thing... There are channels that if they were to give me the house they built, I would have to say thanks but no thanks. I know California has the some of the strict codes but they are meant to keep people safe. Anyhow, I will stop rambling. Love the channel and the work you and your crew do. "Keep on Banging!"

Great window layout overview! I love how you could talk about the project mistakes without talking bad on the other contractor, we all make mistakes and we never know what battles someone else is fighting. I admire your taking the high road. The work flow conversation at the end was pretty great also.

Hey Matt, I'm on the other corner of the country in Maine. I'm in my 47th year banging nails so I'm old school, but I embrace the new methods and codes. Ov course we don't deal with the earthquake stuff just 70# roof loads and 4' frost lines. You mentioned the "old School" framer and 1 sill plate. Because in my years of working, I also do the finish work so I know we should have a double sill to make trimming the window out easier on the trim guy, me. I never knew what the minimum for code was, we just always used a double sill. I really enjoy watching you young guys build. I wish I could do the heavy stuff, but at 66, I'm worn out and busted up.

I did prefab framing our prints came from the boss everything was precut for us and we marked out all the plates put everything together according to the print . Each wall was a separate print with a wall number . We then sent it down the line and it would get stacked at the end of the line on a stacking order and put on a truck and sent to the job site. This is interesting to me I’ve never seen how it’s done outside of a factory. Pretty interesting

Nice video. On the window layout around the 7 min. mark, I thought usually you give the opening an extra 1/2 inch. So I would think the rough opening for the window is 36 1/2" x 60 1/2". And then the trimmer would be 39 1/2". Divided by two, the first trimmer would be 19 3/4" from the centerline.

Great video and good on you for taking on this project and getting the owners squared away. We just purchased our first home, a 1933 3br/2ba on .75 acres , with a studio apartment/in-law cottage that was built in 1958. Any tips on constructing the casings? The current doors were thoughtlessly stuck in and are smaller than the replacements, which are quite heavy. I’m not in construction. But how would you price a project with so many unknowns and issues. All while trying to stay in the purchasers budget?
@MattBangsWood2 жыл бұрын
You have to break down EVERYTHING.. it costs more to come in afterwards, due to these unknowns.. We’re fixing something that’s already been paid for to be built. The easiest way people do this is a payment term called Time & Material. I gave them a price to complete the whole thing, but time and material is [(hourly employee charge $65-85) x working hours + (material cost + 15%)].
@TheJoker-ex5rb2 жыл бұрын

Back to the windows , a 2o window is 24” wide. So you add inch and half for the jacks on each side. Does that still give room for insulation or is that an tight fit? Just confused how much space you will have between the window sides and the jack stud. Thanks
@MattBangsWood2 жыл бұрын
2'0 window is 24" wide, you add inch and a half to both sides.. but the window is actually 23.5", leaving you 1/2", or 1/4" around the whole window. Plenty of room to insulate with foam.

Lower deck in just the shower area could potentially make sense, and ultimately what we came to, that it should have been lower but not the toilet + closet.
@meshedgears27942 жыл бұрын
@@MattBangsWood Yeah maybe, but I am currently looking at doing an 11 7/8" joist everywhere then using 9.5" joists in the baths to get the use of insulation below and electric heated floor, and to avoid using beams and a bunch of metal hangars for just the shower area. Inspectors in my area figure the entire bathroom is one big shower so they like water proofing everywhere. :) -MG

You make everything easy to understand and absorb. The fact that the previous framers even got the job is crazy enough that I'd love to know how they got the contract. The plans we get have a separate set of framing plans with all the details. I suspect it all had something to do with money saving given the cost of construction these days.
