This was once part of an old gold mine in Georgia. The mountain had several mines and mills, operations began in the 1800's and the area was used for mining up until the mid-1900's. As I explored around I saw remains from one of the old mines. It was like taking a journey back in time...
Check out these links to learn more about Georgia gold mining history. If you find this area or places like it please be respectful of the history that still remains, thank you.

If I may ask, what part of Georgia were you in? It appears to be the Dahlonega area with the northern Georgia foothills around you. I live in a small town, just off I-20, on the Alabama/Georgia border. We have an old gold mine here that has just recently reopened. I also have the privilege of having family with the richest panning creek in our area. I enjoy just getting out with a sluice box, shovel, bucket, classifier and a pan and listen to the sounds of nature while I dig up free money.

The first time my Grand Father saw an automobile was when the suits from Creighton came to their home to tell them they lost his uncle and cousin in the collapse. They were following what was believe a highly profitable seem of gold and tunneled to close to the Etowah River. The river washed killing several miners.

It’s accessible from a trail in Yahoola park. I live 1 mile away and it’s not restricted. There are public walking trails right to it. There’s black bear and lots of deer up there. One thing I like to do is wonder off the trails and go exploring. I’ve found some cool stuff doing so. Early settlers would find gold nuggets and rocks just glimmering in the woods and creeks. I’ve got two natural springs on my property and have panned and found gold remnants myself. My back yard has a hydro mining gulch in it from mining operations. Dahlonega is a beautiful place.

I prefer to not post the location directly here are you interested in exploring it? This is one of the most interesting sites I explored and to be able to see the history that still remains, the entire area has a lot of gold mine history. To often I see sites get vandalized, people taking things and such so that is part of my reasoning for being a little discrete about it.
