Once one of the biggest supplies of breaded chicken in the country, responsible for supplying many major supermarkets plus KFC with products, Grampian Chicken decided to close it's doors in early 2009 due to significant profit losses with the unfortunate loss of over 300 jobs. The site has sat derelict since then with proposals put in place to develop the land into residential use.

I worked there for a couple of years or so around 2000 and had some great laughs. I started of packing and ended up as a engineer/line setter then a team leader running a line making kievs and hot wings!

I also worked in 2006-2007. we worked on frozen packing,we came as a group of young people from Ukraine and it was a very positive time for us. many memories about the factory))) I remember Linda Spencer, Gareth (if I am not mistaken, the engineer, Marcelo (engineer) Emerson, the manager. lived in the center of Atelboro and it was not far from work. I remember how we were all gathered that the factory was closing, after that, we worked for several months and returned to Ukraine. I met a lot of friends at this factory, with whom I still communicate (I remember the fire at that time). only positive memories remain in my heart. All the best Andriy Tkachenko

Use to work here - You first walked into the frozen pallet storage area 2:24 which was actually a huge freezer and it was connected to the area known as "frozen packing" - The main packing area was the area that spoke of having people currently inhabiting it. That would make sense as it was the largest open area of the site. The site was had two main factory / production departments by the 2000's - "High care" and another area fondly known as "Frozen packing" - even though they didn't just pack there. "High care" was an area that had different quality control procedures and regulations - this was the area that processed food for brands such as McCains (anyone remember McCain microwave Wings or ribs)? - you walked up the stairs from the HC department at approx 17:26 you then enter into the "High Care" Ladies changing room (which had a different PPE that couldnt be worn outside of 'High care')- which was inside the main ladies changing room. By 20:04 you were in the Canteen and staff shop area. At 2:21 you mentioned about the smell of this building - this made sense to me as this is where the dry materials were kept - things like breading and flour to make the batter for things like Nuggets for Asda and Brakes bros to name a few. Approx 18+ months before the site was closed the factory won a contract to make the 'Boneless chicken' for KFC - the contract meant the factory had to have a separate section just for KFC - it cost the owners huge amounts of money to cater to KFC and to make these changes KFC wanted. This ultimately played a huge role in the factory closing as the money invested into this contract was not a profitable as first thought. No Chickens were slaughtered or kept at this site- however the straw was very likely used to soak up the last of the oil from the huge deep fat fryers. The site was once fined when an agency worker tipped out thousands of litres of oil near the farm land... They had no clue what they were doing - and cost the company thousands of pounds and caused untold damage to the local wildlife and farmed land next to it. Fun fact in early 2000's they also produced one line of McCain pork ribs. This factory in general had lots of happy and hard working people run it on the daily. It was also raided many times often in the early hours of the morning by immigration officers and illegal immigrants were captured - many many times in the early 2000's. You were spot on when you said about how close it was to housing. Often those living nearby would lodge complaints if the lorries arrived late to unload.

Hi there.. Thank you so much for the interesting account of your memories during your time there.. its really helps to set the scene of how it was back in its day.. I used to know a few people that worked there years ago, and worked at a couple of similar places myself when I was a student.. I think once you've been to one you can pretty much guess their layouts and uses.. Thanks for watching 😊
