Abandoned: Illinois's First Insane Asylum

We had some days off of the weather, so we went out exploring. Our first abandoned place to visit was the Jacksonville Developmental Center in Jacksonville, IL. This was Illinois's first insane asylum. You'll learn about the history of the place and a very important woman, Elizabeth Packard, who helped reform the laws around the treatment of insane patients.

I was born in Jacksonville, Il. The old section of the state hospital had tunnels with manacles imbedded in the walls. They may have been sealed off since, but when I was in high school you could still get down there.

Wow! Did you see anything interesting or creepy in there? I would have loved to explore inside. They had it boarded up so well and too many people walking around to do it though.

I just went to those and I walked around there’s a bunch of the boarded windows off and it’s crazy probably would never go in because of the mold…

Yes they have the windows boarded up really well. I am sure it's toxic in there!
