In the year 2000 for unknown reasons, the family Donelly left behind a multi-million dollar palace. With it they also left all their belongings behind en it seems like they disappeared from planet earth. They were very wealthy Italian wine and olive farmers and they owned one of the biggest wine businesses in the whole of Italy. In this weeks video, we explore what is left behind of there lives in this incredible place and tell you their life story.

Hi, an Italian here. This is one the 15th century palaces of a branch of the Gonzaga family. One of the most important families in northern Italy. They were at the head of Mantua. In the 1700s the dynasty died out and this rural court passed to various families. The last family was that of the Giovannini Donelli (not Donelly). They took possession of it in 1904 and lived there until the mid-60s. After that it became their holiday residence until it was no longer used for structural reasons and lack of money. Unfortunately, the family did nothing until the matriarch, Ines Giovannini Donelli, passed away in 2005 at the age of 108. The family then put the property up for sale. As you can imagine, it is worth millions and it is not a very easy building to sell given the renovations to be carried out. In 2008, the financial crisis was therefore even more difficult and in 2012 in the nearby province there was a major earthquake in Italy which also affected the court. IN OCTOBER 2020 THE RESTORATION WORKS HAVE STARTED AND THE COURT WILL RETURN TO ITS SPLENDOR. However, I must tell you that what you are doing is ILLEGAL and DANGEROUS you have entered a private property, a historical asset and moreover uninhabitable by the earthquake. All the wrong things you could have done you have done. And to you who see these videos I can tell you that we Italians care immensely for our cultural heritage but behind every image you see and for which you are indignant there is a very complex story.

Many times it is because of the taxes (death/inheritance) especially in countries with high tax rates...family members are unable to pay so these properties go abandoned

Hi Lesley and Jordy, Bros of Decay, I enjoyed watching this video of the Italian wine palace. It's such a pleasure going together with you in mind through these rooms and listening to your comment. The calendar of 2001 is showing the Polish Pope Carol Woitila or John Paul II. - I loved so much listening to you, when you were showing all these smaller personal items in these rooms, especially in the kids rooms. That was somehow very touching! . - Lovely to see that very old kids model train set in the attic. I once more liked your vivid imagination, when you were telling how the people used to live and work there in that mansion. - And - yes you really managed once more surprising me with this final "present" in your video, when you opened that door to reveal this incredibly beautiful small church in the Italian rokoko style. - Wonderful! - Also Jordy did a great job with the camera. - Wishing you all the best and take care, stay safe, peace and kindest regards.

Glorea Vanderbilt once wandered into the kitchen and all the servants froze, she had no idea where food came, it just appeard on the tabvle served by servants.

The books on the second room (the one after the kitchen, the study? I don't know how to call it in english, sorry) aren't religious, it's italian literature. Ancient literature, but still... Dante Alighieri's "La divina commedia" is the book (kind of a trilogy, actually if we put it in modern terms) from where italian as it is was born (Well, more or less, but normally we can make it simple this way). Sorry for the random comment...

Nice Villa, not really a Palace with 3-4 formal rooms. More a Gentleman Farmer, Possible Baronet estate. Largest room Entry Hall/ Ball Room. The room with the beamed ceiling now used as a bed Room, Was probably the Formal Parlor then/Living room of today. Chapel I saw in the Video was in the Baroque style c. 1700. Probably around 1900 the estate wasn't live in by the Originally owners, and the Farmer who managed the estate moved into the villa, most of the furniture dates to the late Victorian early Edwardian periods, mostly upper middle class, the newest furniture seems to be about the 1970's, estimated abandoned late 1970's early 1980's. The clasp of the ceiling and cracks in the walls seem to indicate Earthquake Damage at the time of abandonment. It might have been to costly to repair. But nice explore!!

Yeah, I've also noticed the staged stuff & one possible explanation for them being in the video is that these guys filming these cool videos get paid by the local rich men to advertise their region for tourism purposes via placing such items in the abandoned places... There was no Italian Royal Family by the name of Donnelli (or any other variant) - perhaps this villa was owned by a noble Italian family but there is a big difference between "Royal" and "Noble". The Italian Royal Family was the House of Savoy, deposed in 1946 after a referendum.

However, I must tell you that what they are doing is ILLEGAL and DANGEROUS they have entered a private property, a historical asset and moreover uninhabitable by the earthquake. All the wrong things they could have done they have done. And to you who see these videos I can tell you that we Italians care immensely for our cultural heritage but behind every image you see there is a very complex story.

How cool! The books on the little desk are copies of The Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri. In short, its about travels through the afterlife, through here, purgatory, and paradise. He completed it in 1320.

Lesley, Jordie...Again you guys just took everyone on a pleasant journey of our imaginations as you always do...have you guys ever thought of maybe talking to someone that could possibly get your own traveling show on television where you could share your journeys, I think that would be great, I mean besides just KZbin, maybe have it on public educational channels? I think you would have no problem getting viewers you two do such a good job, and you as I've said before have that old world charm and style about yourselves not brash and loud like others. Take care guys..👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Hi Lesley, you never cease to amaze us with your amazing finds! But I have to agree with all your other viewers that you and your brother should wear a face mask! Many of these old houses have mould which might affect you later in life! As always, I like how respectful you are of people’s belongings!

Substitute the 'y' for an 'i' and it becomes more Italian. I'm suspect of any house remaining empty very long in Italy with the endless squatters always looking for a new home.

The letter 'Y' does not exist in the Italian alphabet. So this could have been a transplanted family. Would be interesting to research.

Hey guys , Your doing a terrific job of letting us see what you see but I believe that’s only half the story. Really wish you would ask around when you get to these sights and speak to a local historian. That would enable us your viewers to understand what we are looking at . Too me it’s rather strange that these big old houses have bedrooms that lead into other bedrooms meaning you would have to walk through the rest of your family’s bedrooms to get to the bathroom or the hall. So strange. Also you show absolutely no fear trotting through a home that you know nothing of the past or what might have happened in any one room or the basement. Obviously you have not run into anything yet that gave you the ibby geebys. The photography is good and you explain what you find , I just wish you had a local historian with you or you had a good idea of the family history. Stay safe ! Paul , St Petersburg, Fl ( USA)
