I spent several weeks there each summer as a kid in the late 60's it was a place that my mother frequented because she had arthritis and it seemed to help her. The 3 pools all were different temps and at 2 pm every day they served ice cold fresh pressed carrot juice yummm. There was a abundant supply of water since there is an underground lake under the dry soda lake but that water was seriously salty, they had to chill the water in order for it to be palatable. I was told that it used to be an old Spanish fort at one time but I'm not sure about that. All of the rooms did have a bathroom at one time also. The pond was fed by an underground source and it had fish in it, it also used to have a big life boat floating on the pond but the pond wasn't more than about 5' deep, I know because I walked in it. The guy that ran the place called himself Dr. Anderson I believe, he had all kinds of natural products that he peddled, he also had a radio program too! The food at all 3 meals were excellent and what I liked the best was that they had fresh pineapple at every meal. What I was told was that Dr. Anderson's father had a 99 year lease that was passed on to him, I guess the lease ran out and the govt. kicked him out. If you were to walk about a mile south is where the train that used to run through there had a depot where borax was loaded from the mule teams that brought it. There was also an underground cellar where rabbits were raised for meat when Dr. Anderson's father owned it. I made a fair amount of summer friends there and even fell in puppy love with Dr. Anderson's niece/grand daughter (not sure which) one summer. I have great memories but yeah it was pretty windy there too!

Although I'm playing catch up with your vast amount of YT Vlogs, and having just discovered your narrative talents and adventurous spirit, I must give you a proud 'n' loud shout out to express just how much I, we, all your viewers adore you, and sometimes worry about you. Please stay safe in all you do as you trek far and wide through Rattle snake and Grizzly country, and as you tip toe through the rickety abandoned structures of days gone by. Additionally, thank you for allowing us to visit these places we long to see in person, but can't for various reasons. Your efforts allow us to see things thru the lens of a most caring, funny, intelligent 21st century explorer. P.S. your new theme song and your signature star spangled sunglasses always make my day!😅 You have made America great again. Thank you! 😉

When I was a kid ( 65 years ago) my dad had a couple of mining claims in Death Valley. The claims were for lead, silver, gold and zinc. He homesteaded a few acres of land some miles outside of Baker. He had to make improvements twice a year to maintain the homesteads. So twice a year we would go out into the middle of Death Valley and camp for two weeks. He would take a few sticks of dynamite and blow some holes into the side of the mountain. We'd take home some ore and he would refine it and get a little bit of gold and silver out of the ore. Anyway, to make a short story long...he had to make those improvements or lose the land. The man who "owned" the land with the spa might have had requirements that he had to do to keep the land. That may be why he lost the land.
@katiemoyer86794 жыл бұрын
May Ward interesting story, interesting childhood, thank you. . These days, blowing a hole in nature is no longer considered “ improving” by most.

I heard that no only had Springer not "improved" the land by the govt's definition, but he was also selling homesites to guests/investors, which was also against the rules.

In the mid to late 90's I attended a photography seminar and stayed three nights in one of the rooms. There was an outdoor concrete shower building and shared bathrooms plus a dining hall and kitchen with simple accommodations plus good facilities for teaching. San Bernardino State was sponsoring the seminar and the place was well kept at that time and we toured the facilities that were in ruins plus some great hikes around the area perfect for photography. I remember from the tour guide, Springer began advertising on the radio for folks to visit his healing retreat which brought attention to his business. He was closed down due to not paying taxes which was easy to enforce. The day we left an astronomy group was entering Zzyzyx to use the facilities. It was an awesome place to do photography, hike and just hang out. I cannot attest to any healing waters but the quiet and remoteness of the landscape was certainly healing.

Great video! Back in the early 2000's, i worked for Cal State L.A., and was fortunate enough to stay a weekend. We had a biologist, a geologist and an astronomer showing us direct and hands on actvities. Along with a mess hall with delicious home made meals. It was so fun. Nice memories and yes, thise were all the original buildings. The baths were no longer in use, tho.

I'm in Arkansas, I used to live in Vegas and moved back here in 2003. I have always wondered about this exit!! Love the video! Hot Springs Arkansas was made famous for its healing natural mineral hot springs. Also made famous by Al Capone and other gangsters. There used to be an old tunnel system under Little Rock, that started at the river for soldiers, Underground Railroad, prohibition, Dixie Mafia, Etc. These tunnels went all under the downtown area and train station, where the famous Slick Willis bar once was. I worked there over 20 years ago and we used to lift up the metal panels and go through tunnels a few hundred yards until a brick wall stopped us. Tunnels went past downtown according to maps we acquired from county clerk office, back to the Arkansas River, and not very far up started again from the river. Rumored to go all the way to Hot Springs. It is known that Hot Springs also has a tunnel system. The Arlington is perhaps the most popular Hotel for years. It is beautiful. There is bathhouse row that has a couple operational bath and spas, a couple as museums, and the one that housed famous gangsters. I love your videos!!!!

I've stayed at the Arlington Hotel Hot Springs many times. It has a really interesting history. Back in the old gangster days Hot Springs was considered neutral and all the gangsters could go there and not kill each other. Al Capone had suites of rooms on the third floor overlooking the street out front so he could see who was in town. I thing Jimmy Cagne had a club there too. There was a club across the street from the hotel that had a secret wire service so they could get racing results from other parts of the country to rig the odds for betters who didn't know the results. There's also a really nice restaurant on Lake Hamilton nearbye called strangely enough Hamilton House. It had a secret tunnel exit that led towards the lake used for Gangsters to slip out secretly in case of trouble. Its still there and you can use it. The Arlington dates back to the 20's and was the place to stay. By the by your video was great as usual. Thanks

Loving the comments from the people that have been there when it was opened! The 'Doctor' broadcasted live on the radio from there, and the people travelling on I-15 going to Vegas could hear him. That may explain the antenna towers. On his radio program, he advertised his resort and his 'Healing Tonic' that would cure just about anything that was wrong with you. He came up with the name Zzyzyx to be know as the... "last name in medicine". Also, the Hot Springs were not natural, they were heated...LoL. From what I understand, they allowed him (or ignored him) to operate on the strength of his homestead, but shut him down when he started selling parcels of the property. Very interesting story!

I used to use this road as a gateway for several camping trips with Alan ROMS Romspert and Allen Schoenherr (the seemingly omnipotent) and most incredible anatomy/zoology/natural history professors I’d ever had. Check out one his books! They both taught for CSUF, among many others. Romspert had the largest collection of CA desert plants at his herbarium at the Desert Consortium where he had a a hand in everything. This place isn’t haunted nor eerie as some of the other channels suggest. I had some of the best days and nights 😉 of my life back then. Wow I can’t believe I got this recommended to me nearly 30 years later, THANKS KZbin. Weird 🤔 ‘ROMS’ unfortunately past away from cancer in 2009...’till we meet again.

I found this video to be fascinating. I watched it in the middle of the night, then went back to bed. This morning I woke up and my curiosiy was pounding my brain. So I loked upReverend Curtis Howe Sprague. He was, indeed, a character. He laid clain to over 12,000 acres for ZZYZK and built an asis in the desert. He was prosecuted and persecuted by the Naional Park Service, AMA, BLM and a host of others. It took them years and years to shut him down. As to fraud, he served 45 days in jail. Not much fraud there. The Government hates what it can't comprehend. While watching your video I was wondering from where emplyees would come. On Google earth I found the small town of Baker was only 7 miles North. What a boon it would be to have ZZYZK rnning full tilt with jobs for townspeople. I also particularly like the Industrial places, like the Cement Factory.

I envision a parking lot with RV hook-ups, a large natural salt water pool, salt water bath tubs, a fresh water shower, and a large barbeque area. But most of all cleaning up all the trash there. I bet the place would clean up well. The problem is that it is in California and not Nevada.

The windows look like they're from an industrial site. The house I grew up in was built in 1948, and there was still a building supply shortage after the war. The windows were steel and had a pane that opened out, no screens. They were replaced in the 70s with double-pane sliding aluminum windows.

Once again I am jealous that you are so many trips ahead of me! I've driven past that road so many times thinking I need to just take the ramp... Still pet-sitting (and house-sitting) and don't have time to make sure my real travel vehicle (an old SUV) is safe for those cool treks. My run-around car works okay right now but I don't want to use it for anywhere outside of Vegas for now. That oasis is cool! I would think maybe it's a good spot for me to set up camp and take photos of animals that rely on the water. It's interesting that the water fills there very well many years after their "heyday"... could be good engineering, or the state keeps it going with a touch of maintenance. Probably the former. ...and that guy who started it all, LOL!! How many of these characters were are out there? Jesus! Scam artists that somewhat believe in themselves have been around for thousands of years, probably. Just look at the ways Heron of Alexandria and others were clever enough to (for a fee I'm sure) help leaders of start-up religions dupe people into thinking "the gods" were opening the temple doors after the fires were lit in the vases outside (it had to do with steam power winding gears, rope and presto.... doors open). Even Dr. Kellogg up in Michigan (I think) was kind of like that. The cereal named after him I suppose is proof he was legitimately trying here and there. Mathew Broderick and I think Anthony Hopkins are in a movie about that Kellogg dude. It's pretty amusing and weird. Makes me want to time-travel just to observe. Well... rambling again, sorry. I need to learn how to make these videos soon. Not looking forward to the learning process though. I'm somewhat of a neanderthal.

The "crawl space" was actually a common air conditioning duct. They probably had a huge swamp cooler on the roof sending cool are down that space to all the rooms. Did you notice that there were no showers in the bath rooms? Unnecessary I suppose with all the bath houses.

Hotel, door to the room in a hallway. Motel, door to the room on the outside of the building. My herpetology field trip to Zzyzyx, in college, many alco-delics and much fornication, a very good time was had by all. I might have learned something too. Good memories, I think?

I remember driving past that exit and wondering what the hell. Now I know, thanks. I just watched the video you did on the water park on the same stretch of road. I wondered about that too. :-)

I used to hear Bro Springer on radio and his talking about Zzyzx Springs. Often wondered what it was like, drove by the turnoff many times, I should have gone up the road and took a look before the feds drove him out. I am sure he had enough money to retire in luxury. Thanks for taking us up the road. I think Huel Howser did a program on this on his California Gold program.
