You're genuinely an inspiration to me. I'm only 22 and have a very supportive family, they've helped me have my own little workshop where I work on cars of myself and friends, I've learned so many things about old vehicles, what to be weary of and how to work on them from you. Finding your channel was the best thing that has ever happened to me. You've inspired me to restore and love old cars. Thank you Kevin!

Awesome using Pertronix! I used them for a drop in igniter ignition on a old amc v8 in 1995. Last year the inductor ring broke and I emailed them for a price on a replacement. They emailed me back and asked if I still lived at the same address that I sent my warranty card from all those years ago. I said yes and they literally set me a new inductor ring via priority mail for friggen FREE!! Damn near 30 years after the sale!!

Hey Kevin…..as a rule of thumb while you have that engine out of the chassis now would be an excellent time to replace ALL of the freeze plugs. Even back when those Mopars were just a few years old they would eat up freeze plugs!

The clear paint is a good trick to help prevent all of the spotting you inevitably get with aluminum. I went ahead and painted mine the block color. Mimics a cast intake pretty well but I like the look of orange over the aluminum color. Like you said the trick is to just never have gas dripping down on the paint.

My experience is with leaky valves with old engines that has been sitting for a while is most of the time of rusty valve seats. Which you can get ride off quite quickly by giving the valves a bit more valve clearance, and after it has run for 20 min you can go back to stock clearance or what is advised for the type of cam. Nice to see you guys having a lot of fun together!

When removing the harmonic balancer instead of pushing against the crank bolt and washer, remove the washer and run the bolt in all the way. It will clear the balancer without the washer on and you can do one pull with the puller without having to pull the bolt out. You also are engaging all the threads so no chance of messing the threads up.

Awesome, these videos have me mesmerized! In the previous video I was wondering why you didn't work on the block first (the peripheral items are not likely to be show stoppers), but this video provided all the answers. I guess the secret is having a lot of experience with rebuilds/restorations which lets you size up the potential gotchas of a project like this. From the big coolant puddle in the previous video I speculated a broken water jacket, but fortunately not. A leaking freeze plug on a 318, imagine that! The color and luster brought to the surface by buffing and polishing is just astounding. Love that throaty engine roar near the end of the video - what a sweet sound! As a former 72 Challenger owner these videos really tug on my heart strings.

Since you had the oil pan off I would of at least pulled the pickup screen off to see if what was left of the valve guide seals were in the screen, they restrict oil flow leading to low oil pressure issues. The worn exhaust valve guides will lead to blowback , it will start at high way speed getting progressively worse, that four barrel and cam did not help the situation as for extending the life of that engine, 318s are tough little engines and will give you a 400 thousand miles service life if they are properly maintained...wish I still had my 73 sattilite, it was a beautiful car.

fun thing about the chrysler engines is we paint 'em all in one peice, after they're put together.. you can assemble it fully minus the carb, and just go at it.. then add fuel pump n accessories.. no need to worry about over spray that way, and from the factory the bottom of the pan was barely painted. Makes it real easy to be factory looking heh..

Kevin, that engine has been seriously overheated. The carbon-like crust is the result of a paraffin based oil, probably Pennzoil or Quaker state. The inside of the engine probably would clean up quickly if you shorted it a quart of oil and added a quart of ATF instead, at least for a couple of oil changes. As always, great video and excellent content. Thank you for stressing the importance of cam break-in for flat tappet cams.
