Quidhampton stone terminal. You are walking on what remains of the GWR line from Westbury to Salisbury. This section was retained to serve the quarry. The lines to the quarry go off to the right. The connections at Wilton replaced the separate double track GWR/SR lines in the early 1970s.

Update Feb 2022 Its Quidhampton quarry. West of Salisbury UK. Closed 2009 hence only partly overgrown. There were/are plans to infill it with waste aggregate which would be delivered by train, so the tracks would be useful in that event. If you Google "Quidhampton quarry" there's a good KZbin video (by Salisbury radio) which is done by drone and starts off from where this video was recorded
@angelsone-five79124 жыл бұрын
Looked at Google Earth and it appears to be the quarry just the other side of the A36 from Wilton. That track is in amazing condition, I`ve seen worse sleepers on main lines. Nice vid James.

Quidhampton. I passed there driving a 159 about 10 years ago and saw the Royal Train parked behind that dummy. They kept it there overnight while Charlie was on a local visit.
@hreader5 жыл бұрын
I sometimes have strange dreams about train travel where my train starts on an ordinary line in full use, then the line gets more and more overgrown like the one in the video - and eventually the rails disappear entirely and the train is somehow running on meadow grass or perhaps over under-brush! They're always quite pleasant dreams. I hope all that buddleia shown towards the end of the film is attracting lots and lots of butteflies! My parents used to keep a large buddleia at the bottom of their garden which was quite a magnet for these insects.
@johnhardman35 жыл бұрын
When the Woodhead line finally closed and the extensive Manchester-end sidings were torn up, buddleia seemed to come out of nowhere to replace the missing sleepers, along with fast-growing birch trees, almost as if the plants had been biding their time.

Quidhampton Sidings for the former chalk & china clay quarry closed in 2009. It's only about 2 miles West of Salisbury station at Wilton Junction where the Western line branches off from the Southern to Westbury. It must have been "mothballed" for possible future use or it would have been torn up. I read that good-condition continuously-welded (in-tunnel) track from the former Manchester-Sheffield main line was never reused but just sent for scrap,and this line looks rather woebegone, despite the in-situ points-signalling: maybe the sleepers have rotted away, as you'd probably expect.There doesn't seem to be any visible "development" around the trackbed (like housing-estates or industry) that the disused line could serve.

IMERYS at Quidhampton, Salisbury. Last train out with full wagons was 30 March 2009. The Quarry closed as the local authority refused planning permission to extend the quarry. These sidings at Quidhampton are located at the junction of the Western and Southern lines on the Warminster side of Salisbury at Wilton. I am given to understand that these sidings use the former Western lines from Wilton to Salisbury after the track layout was rationalised some many years ago. All traffic now uses the former Southern lines dividing at Wilton for Warminster or Tisbury. The sidings are controlled by a ground frame.
