Want to see our Abandoned Boat Transformation? This is how we transformed our once project sailboat over 4 1/2 years. This boat refit was more than what we imagined it to be. We knew we needed to get a project sailboat, in order to be able to afford it, one that we could make our own, and pay little by little as we go. We do many projects on our sailboat Alma during this time. We go into detail showing you where we got our project boat, how we got her, and what exactly we did to our once abandoned boat to make her sailable.
It took us a long time to fix our project boat, but it was very rewarding. Now our once project boat, sails like a dream...
This is a journey that we look forward to sharing with all of you!

This is exactly the type of YT video I respect and enjoy. When you both knew that this yacht was right for you, the one of your dreams, you committed yourselves to making it so. In appreciating the sheer beauty of the yacht, you've put your hearts and souls into her, together with every minute and every dollar you could spare. With your love, care and dedication, you have given new life to your beautiful sailing home which now shines as a beacon, reflecting your absolute commitment to make her the best she could be. I look forward to seeing your videography and appreciate you taking the time out to document your intensive restoration and refit. Subscribed!

This brings back many memories as a friend in Seattle had an E41 and he loved that boat and kept it like a fine piece of furniture. Unfortunately he passed and I'm afraid the old girl is probably more like the old Alma than a fine piece of furniture now. Very sad as I miss them both but will retrain great memories of sailing with him on her.

Great Job! Sometimes you have to start out NOT knowing, or you wouldn't start, it would just be too overwhelming, but look at what you have achieved and all the useful skills you have learned. Not just a couple of dreamers who thought about it, you got started and refused to back down, even when stuff got "messy". Persistence, that's a great quality in anyone's skillset.

Hi, I started on this episode and liked it and went back to what appeared at that time, episode one, which turned out to be episode two and spent the next hour or so catching up. I love the travel aspect you have put into these videos and suggest you keep on giving more of the travel log and family. I love the sailing but remember that there are a lot of sailing tubes and they are all doing the slow mo sail and water shots. Your sail up the ICW is fantastic, I am really enjoying the historical parts you are stopping at and you are showing a lot in the small amount of time... most haven't concentrated on that side of their tubes....as I am from Australia its great to see something new and beautiful......well done While I was viewing I thought you should look at another couple sailing...Sailing UMA. They really similar and then I found episode one... seems I don't have to recommend UMA :). looking forward to the next one.rgds

Well done. I spent a couple of years prepping a boat for cruising myself in my 40s, and I did so while working too. Then I sailed away, and haven't worked a day since - for someone else anyway. There's a sense of acomplishment and self reliance that comes from doing what you are doing that is priceless. I'm in my 50s now, and I still live aboard a boat and sail it regularly. My only regret is not doing it sooner - Bravo you two!

Thanks! The boat was a 20 foot (!) Pacific Seacraft Flicka without an engine. I cruised her for 6 months from LA to Baja and the Sea of Cortez. With my girlfriend. Who'd never sailed anything. Here's a tip: If you want to find out if you are truly compatible with a prospective partner, go on an extended cruise aboard a small boat in a remote area where you have to rely on each other for survival. Either you'll develop really good conflict resolution skills, or you'll be sailing solo in short order. If you're able to work as a team, it bodes very well for a long term relationship. We are still close friends 10 years later, and I'm telling you - that trip was the key.

@@SailingAlma Sadly we swallowed the anchor 9 years ago. While in Mexico, and planning to head to Central/South America for hurricane season, my folks came down for a visit. My mom had early onset Alzheimer's and it rapidly became clear that we'd be heading to the Pacific Northwest instead. So we're here, helping to deal with aging parents, first Mom until she passed away, and now Dad. But we have never regretted the financial sacrifices we made to refit the boat and take off. Our 10 years aboard was easily the most fulfilling and rewarding 10 years of our lives.

I am at the same Fort Pierce boat yard doing my own refit (more than 4 years in my case). I was there when Alma came in and saw the progress you made. You should be very proud, she will give you many years of return on your hard efforts. It is great to see people take these old boats and labor through love to keep them around for the next generation.

Hi Dana, Wow what a small world!!!! We wish you all the best on your refit, how is it going so far? It definitely is labor of love, as Im sure you know from your own refit. But it does give you a feeling of accomplishment. Best of wishes to you!

It’s nice to see a classic boat restored properly to as good, or better, than new condition. I wish more people would consider this before buying a newly built boat. These old boats can give great pleasure to a new generation of sailors.

There is the infamous boat factor. Everything you do on a boat must be multiplied with that factor to arrive at an estimate that is realistic.I think you just can calculate your personal boat factor now.

@@SailingAlma I am a fan of offbeat 1960's cars. My first car was a 1966 Buick Lesabre 4 door. It was a boat, pun intended, but I could pack up to 6 of my friends in it and we had so much fun. Currently I own a 1994 F150 that is as much a project truck as it is a work truck. I am a carpenter by trade and use it for work. The thing is, when you have the chance to buy a short cab, long bed 101K, 4WD truck for $1200...I couldn't pass it up.
