Such a shame to see the destruction of such a facility. Giving opportunities to kids and young people to sample activities like this is so important. I hope it returns for the the youth of Sheffield

Its disturbing that it actually hasnt decomposed more. Some of those fabrics could be plastic-based and chemically harmful. I can understand nobody having the finances or willpower to rebuild but it should be cleaned up enough for nature to move in properly. An urban nature reserve? A Park? An allotment area (terraced like in Asia), A forest even? Come on city council - get it done!
@studioshorelinestoreonetsy78554 ай бұрын
Yes, they were plastic... The wires in a diamond pattern had plastic bristles on top (like a sweeping brush) to simulate powder snow and the carpet runs were faster to simulate compressed snow (no slowing by using the snow plow technique on thease runs 😂😂😂) ... All were constantly wet, by sprinklers and pipes, under the slopes.... Probably why they are torn up to get at the scrap metal.....

Great video. I went there in 1989 on a school trip and bought my skiing jacket from the shop there for my first season working in the French Alps quite a few years later. It’s so sad to see it as it is now. I do hope they do something with it soon. Restoring it as a ski slope would be great. I would definitely use it.

So so sad to see this now but thank you for doing this video, once a week I would go ski here after school, so many fabulous and funny memories from my childhood.... I miss this place so much. The signs to get there are still on the roads around Sheffield, it's a heart pain when I see them.... I wish it could be re built.

I knew there was a ski village somewhere in Sheffield. I thought I must have imagined it as I searched for open ski slopes nearby and couldn’t find it. This is obviously why 😢 I used to ski a lot as a kid and wanted to take my lad. Such a shame this is no longer open as it looked like an awesome place to ski.

@@carebears9010 Two teenagers have been given community orders for setting a fire at an outdoor ski village in Sheffield. The fire at Sheffield Ski Village on 24 April caused significant damage and the boys, who can not be named, had admitted arson earlier. The city's youth court imposed an 18-month youth rehabilitation order with intensive supervision and a curfew on one boy. The other was given a 12-month referral order also with intensive supervision The fire, which damaged the old cafe at the site, came a year after the main building at the Vale Road site was destroyed by an accidental fire. The really steep bank is a braking bank for the t-bar lift. You are supposed to feed the t-bar back slowly as it passes the bull wheel, but a lot of self taught skiers or those who learned in non t-bar alpine resorts often do not realise this and let go of it like it's a far lighter (and more common) button lift. A steep bank or hobby horse type contraption is sometimes used to make this less dangerous, as on impact it will stop the t-bar swinging around and hitting the next departing skiers in the face.

Very sad that vandalism is so destructive. What sort of morons do this. I never visited to ski but the secretary of our Manchester climbing club was a keen and expert skier. In fact there were a number of qualified ski instructors in our climbing club. The previously mentioned club secretary invited the manufacturer and supplier of the ski slope matting to our club one evening to show a film of the early phase of one of the ski runs. A number of expert skiers did demo runs and because of water running down the plastic mat and pooling in the holes, this sprayed up and at low angle filming, looked like powder snow spraying up from the skis. At the time I saw the film, the later buildings and expanded ski slopes and toboggan runs did not exist until some years later. The vandalism has only taken place it would seem not too long after we left the UK. The problem we have locally now where we live in the alps is a lack of snow on our ski resorts. This winter has been too warm and snow fall on the mountains below 1800 metres is not lasting and not freezing cold enough to spray with the snow cannons. At one time years ago the Peak District hills between Manchester and Sheffield would have been feet deep in snow every winter with road passes over the Pennine moors impassable to motor traffic.
