A quick walk around the abandoned St Andrews church in Dawson City, Yukon. This building catches your eye right away when you're walking around in Dawson City. It is somewhat on the edge of town, so if you don't see the leaning Steeple, you may not even know it is there, but that is precisely what will catch your eye. From downtown, you can see the church peeking around the corner, looking like its ready to fall right over. I am happy to see that this historic building will be standing for many years to come. If you get a chance to visit Dawson City, it is definitely worth coming over for a look.

That is one place I want to visit. The old buildings are cool. I love seeing how they propped 'er up. Lots of love from the locals. Next time you are back in Rupe, go and check out the Oceanview Hotel. It was built in 1910. Best hamburgers in town. Cheers.

You don't make a wrong turn and end up in Dawson City. Our trip there, a few years ago, was interesting. There were a couple of abandoned 'leaner' buildings still standing, The permafrost had slowly taken over. Building techniques in that region had a learning curve, back in the day.

Cool old church. Pretty surprised they went to all that effort to brace it from the inside. I dont see why other than to save the whole thing from coming down. No real use other than a visual exterior of the past now. Cool but not alot to do with it from there on. I think it was too far gone to salvage for a museum or such. Once the foundation and / or roof are gone its usually the end of possible salvation. I wish ya woulda shown us " The Pit " bar ! I just love real run down funky tavern's that still operate ! Keep up the good vids for autumn !

I was in St Andrews Church in July 2003 with my wife and kids. We were only in Dawson for an overnight stay and we took the opportunity to go to church there. We were parked right where you had parked. We walked inside and were greeted at the door and directed to a stairway that went to the Sanctuary upstairs. The first floor was used as a church hall. We took our seats and started people watching to pass the time. A man came into the room wearing a flannel shirt and cargo pants with a large folding hunting knife in a sheath on his belt. He started setting up the Altar for Mass and he left the room after completing his task. Other people had started filing into the room and taking their seats. At Mass time the Priest entered. Lo and behold, it was the same guy with the large knife on his belt only now he was dressed in his vestments. He said something about the church being filled with faces he didn't recognize and that he was happy about that. He asked who was driving the minivan with the Wisconsin license plates. I sheepishly raised my hand. He asked what city I lived in. I told him and he asked about this tiny little town a few miles away that he wouldn't have known about unless he had been there. After Mass, I asked him how he knew about that little crossroad? Sure enough, he was an associate Priest at the small church in that town in his younger years. I asked how he wound up in Dawson? I don't remember his response but he did say that he loved Dawson and he had time to go fishing or hunting nearly every day. He was the coolest Priest I had ever met. Seeing the state of the building makes me sad and I wonder if the parish has moved into another building in Dawson. I also wonder about the little hotel we stayed at, the "Golden Nugget" It was more rundown than the church at the time. We only stayed there because it was half the price of any other hotel in town and we were traveling on a budget. I can still remember the sound of the big Diesel engines at the power plant across the street droning through the night. I didn't sleep well. It was fun though walking the wooden sidewalks in the polar twilight with the only sound coming from any one of the several drinking establishments in town. We drove the Top of the World highway the next day. Stunning is the only word for it. Of all the channels I subscribe to on KZbin, yours is easily my favorite. Keep up the good work.

This church was featured in a documentary on the White Pass And Yukon route but I saw as a kid and I hope they can save that church because it was built buy the Gold Rush Stampeders but it lost its entire congregation when the ice went out the following spring. (All left for the gold feilds)

Churches used to be maintained often by parishioners volunteering time, not happening as much? Did you know church bells being rung can dissipate a storm? Heard that in a Florida hurricane video. Wonder why we no longer often hear bells on Sunday?
