Pretty sure there's daily records from 1964 up there. I don't know about it closing in 1963.

This coal breaker is in the process of being demolished as we speak, at least it started on some of it. It sold to a group who going to scrap everything from it. They are starting that process now. It sucks b/c I had this on my list to check out and gonna not be able to see it. Read it in an article

At 6;24 that metal structure is a head frame for the maple hill No.2 shaft. the shaft is inside that little building directly underneath the metal head frame. it was a vertical elevator cage that would go to the various levels of the mine. the shaft if stil open with a stair cast that just goes down about 200 feet to the mine pool or, water table. sadly you cannot access any of the levels in that mine

It's being demolished now. Sad to say. Great that you got this film. My uncle actually worked there as a teenager in the 1930s. I wish KZbin was around then.

i live in this area and they have been for about the last 2 years tearing down a lot of vacant structures. like they just started tearing down an old factory a block from my house. to many fire bugs around here. like half way between my home and this breaker are 2 small villages that run into each other, they had something like 10 fires in about 6mo. locals are pushing to have vacant properties torn down because one of those fires was set in a vacant row home (3 houses) but one of the 3 was lived in and was destroyed, and another home was in the process of being fixed and they set it on fire twice.

Did you not attempt to climb this one? The steps on the upper floors are likely still intact. That is if you are daring enough to shimmy across the space and climb about. It is frame so very sollid. I wish I could see the upper most floor where that little door comes out. What a view that would be! I assume you would have had a mask and gloves though as the dust would make you sick. Probably would want to discard cloths afterwards as well before getting in your car. Very much dust in there!

Between the coal dust and the asbestos (very much in evidence in the vid), I'll bet a lot of those workers ended up with lung disease. The abatement costs of tearing down that place will be astronomical. The 'no spitting' sign was likely because those lads all chewed tobacco back in the day. Great vid. I was waiting for some old lady to come out of that house and give you Hell.
