Abandoned Towns and Long Lost Treasure | California Coastal | Destination Adventure

This episode hits especially close to my heart, for a couple of reasons. First of all, I am absolutely loving my time at the Ocean, I have impressed myself with the passage so far of highway One, and I got to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Highway One looked pretty sketchy when I was scoping it out on the maps, but doing it for real is a different thing. I am so happy it is the off season, because I am sure there is a lot more traffic in the summer, but this route has just enough challenge already without the incorporation of heavy traffic. In a car or truck, this road would be no problem at all, but in a freight train of a Motorhome, it can make you sweat a little. That being said, this is the only way to see some of the few authentic and pure seaside towns along the California Coast. Places and towns like these are becoming more and more difficult to find, and more so each year, especially in a state with such a dense population.
Another large problem, is folks need for taking things. My visit to Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, was amazing, but everywhere I looked there were people filling ziplock bags with glass. Sure, it is cool to be able to take something home to show your friends and family, but essentially you're robbing them of the chance to see it for themselves. Once these places have been destroyed, they are gone forever. I hope as a society we can begin to understand this.
Moving south from Fort Bragg, I had to detour a couple of times to stay on Highway 1, but it was SOOO worth it. This route has taken me days longer than I had expected, but I have loved every minute of each of those days. And finally, that brings us to San Francisco, and the Golden Gate Bridge. When I joined Cruise ships, I knew nothing about the world. I was uneducated and uncultured, but I learned fast. I absorbed everything around me like a sponge. On two different contracts, I got to stop in San Francisco, and when the ship was going under the Golden Gate Bridge, all of us crew members would go stand on the bow and enjoy the view. This was a special moment for all of us, but we only had that opportunity because of our employment to the cruise line. I was unbelievably proud of that job, but getting to do this stuff through my own personal pursuits and business - that is something special I haven't yet found words for.

You should do a you tube and tell your stories. Nobody says enough about it. I always hear the bad stories. But there has to be good stories too. I can’t imagine being raised there around those beautiful trees. Just the thought of having those magnificent giants around you as you grow up. Love the California coast and redwoods. Research the flood in December of 1964 ,many of those towns like Myers flat were severely flooded or washed out by the Eel river. My family had to evacuate Meyers Flat after losing almost everything they owned.

Those old houses were once rentals at Fenches you could rent them for the weekend or a vacation, great swimming hole down below the cabins and in the summer it's nice and warm. Grew up in Eureka and drove on the avenue of the giants everyday delivering news papers for the Times Standard news paper in Eureka.

There’s so much production value here, you’re practically a one-man show! The music, oh man- that really got me relaxed and feeling like I was right there with you! Those abandoned looking towns have predominantly mid-century modern architecture, which tells me that they were developed during the golden age of cars-the 1950s and 1960s. That was a time when gas was more affordable and people wanted to do everything they could with the family car! Picnics, motor lodges, roadside attractions, and driving through big trees were a must! It’s sad to see those aspects of Americana disappear. I’m glad you’re focusing on the journey, more than the destination. You’re inadvertently creating a record of places many of us would have never seen without your efforts. Thank you!

Thanks for the trip. Now you were in my old hood. Grew up in Northern California. Orick, Ferndale & most of those small towns all along the river even into Hoopa an Indian Reservation were flooded in 1964.....a 100 year flood. It was bad & I mean bad. All the towns were under water or in water. At least the ones that weren't destroyed. We were stranded in Hoopa for months before they could get crews in there to rebuild roads & bridges so we could get the hell out. Left & moved to Oregon. But it was good to see your trip again. Spent many camping trips into the Redwoods. Fun times.

The reason for not allowing lg motorhomes is because the have to travel slower and impede traffic. Most lg rv are driven by people who can not even drive a logging truck

You missed seeing Ferndale and The Lost coast, truly amazing. Going down Ave of the giants, there is a turn off for a small back woods road that goes to a town called Honeydew, then on to Ferndale then the lost coast. If you want rugged and beautiful, this is it.

From an old over the road truck driver here, I’m impressed that you navigate such a large motorhome with trailer in tow. I must confess that navigating your rig is more difficult than a traditional tractor trailer. Especially the types of roads you choose.

I made that drive in 1979. I drove down Avenue of the Giants - totally worth the extra time it takes. I got out and hiked a path into the forest, and the further downhill I went, the bigger the redwoods and the ferns got. It was an Alice-in-Wonderland feeling, as if I were getting smaller.

Love this one. The wife , myself, my Mother in law and our two kids took the coastal trip in 2012. From the northern border to Santa Cruz, the best trip we ever had. Sequoia National forest was the most humbling place I have ever encountered, the shear size and age of those trees while sitting on the forest floor among the ferns and moss. It was truly a life changing experience for my whole family. Love the channel , love the videos. We hope to have our skoolie done by the end of the year and restart our adventures.

Dustin, oh my, the drone footage over the bridge, through the clouds, was amazing. And the Embedded objects in the rock down on the beach, whaaaaaaaat????? I saw the look in your eyes. Your gut intuition said “it doesn't seem right” and your correct. Ive been to the beach and truly hoped you would make it there. The evidence I saw in person and in your video with melted, bent, broken, smashed objects fused into the rock. In actuality, part of the rock. I even found rock specimens with similar man made objects and broken glass all fused into an igneous obviously metamorphic conglomerate rock. So awesome you witnessed it. I plan to do a video some day

The Northern California Coastline has some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever see and find. You can get lost in its beauty. Majestic forests and old growth .. and it is all fairly much preserved. You will find some small town areas like Orek and others that just got lost due to expansions and more modern Interstate Highways and Freeways. They just kind of went off inland and were faster and easier to travel. So all these beautiful little places have become forgotten.. and left out. These new roadways left them behind and the world went on without these small places... Hurting many small businesses. I grew up in the upper North State of California. During the colder winter months it is really wet, windy and colder...so people tend to avoid those areas. Which hurt the small towns even more. Depending where you go ..how far you're traveling you may even come across the old amusement park that used to be along the northern coast area.. Now long forgotten and hidden away by overgrowth. Almost no signs of it are left. It used to have the best log flume ride there was.. and it was eventually sold to the Salt Lake Lagoon park in Utah.. as also a train ride.. I was in the same area as you.. from Crescent City down towards Ukiah just at the beginning of April. Spent a weekend in the redwoods and stayed at an Airbnb. Loved the time up there . It amazes me how, when I was little and visited these areas of the redwoods often and I still recall how massive the trees were. Then as an adult this last visit.. I didn't have that same effect of the grand size.. I guess perspective as a child changes as we get older . Yes the trees are still massive and awe inspiring.. but they just didn't look as big as when I was little. At 10:50 ish.. I believe you're at an old forestry station . Looks familiar as well.

My Husband & myself drove the coast out of San Fran on our honeymoon. It got dark fast & heavy fog, at the end of Sept 1991. All hotels where full, had to sleep in our mustang. We pulled over to sleep, couldn't see a damn thing. Luckily we didn't reverse to far back, b/c when we woke we had parked on a edge of a cliff. Probably about a 100+ ft down the embankment to the ocean. That was scarry. After we left we drove down the coast & stopped at Hurst Castle & checked it out. Wow what money can buy. Drove down 101 in April of 2020. It was super creepy, we were the only car on the road for miles and miles and miles. All small places that we drove through looked almost deserted. So cool to see your excitement! I love it! I grew up outside a little town called Georgetown, in the mountains of California. No electricity, running water, or phone for years. It was a great life for a youngin'. My point.... I grew up going to Fort Bragg and Mendocino (hope you got to make it there too). I consider it my second home. So happy to see you stop there. Thank you again for the many great memories in this one, many up North that I got to spend with my dad a few years ago in our motorhome, and when I got married, my hubby and I did it all again in my Rav4. Good times! Glad you got to do the scenic by way through the redwoods. When you get back into Oregon, check out Sunset Beach if you are able. You can camp there too. Just gorgeous! The botanical gardens are gorgeous there as well, and there's a slough close by that you can hike at. You can get to it all with your motorhome. Thanks again!❤

Wonderful!! Glass Beach is on my bucket list. Several years ago, after I'd driven from BC to Disneyland with my 2 youngest kiddos, tent camping where we could, we were traveling back north. We'd stopped under the Golden Gate Bridge late in the day, and by the time we headed back up onto the bridge it was dinner time. We pulled off somewhere and then decided to take Hwy1 along the coast, as the busy highways just aren't pleasant to drive for me. We headed out on Hwy 1 and it got dark. The road wound around and was narrow and I had no idea where we were going to stay. Finally arrived in a little settlement with just a bar open. It had a campsite with no lights on, so we couldn't even see where to go after we self registered! Another traveler showed up and said he's passed a state park on a side road coming to Hwy 1. So, we ended up following him there, found a sight, very late by now and everyone was asleep. As we set up our tent, we were stalked by a family of racoons that followed us around. It was a pretty sleepless night for us and we were up at dawn and outta there. Now I want to go back and redo that trip in the daylight!!

wow brings back a lot of good memories when i was a kid we moved from washington state to Oregon then to calif my moms family lived in fort Bragg then we moved to santa rosa went threw high school there we use to go to sf all the time back then you could go to china town and buy bricks of fire crackers for 6 bucks lol that was around 1980 or 1981 im 56 i moved back to washington state in 92 awesome memories spending time with my dad who i lost in 2007 and my mom in 2013 i miss them and i miss those days back then life was so much simpler then it is today thank you for taking me back in time lol

It was great. I’m glad somebody else was driving over the Golden gate bridge I’ve never made it that far when I lived in California as far north, as I have a God is LA before all the homeless people corroded the sidewalks. It was nice thank you for taking us along.

You made me laugh. My late husband Karl used to do drag racing, and I've been watching that since I was a kid. They'd "burn out" to get the tires warm and pliable before they started out at "the Christmas tree" a pole with lights to let you know when to go. If you started too fast, or went faster than the time you were given, you'd be disqualified!

You are just north of me! I would sit by the highway if I knew when you were cruising by! You’ve got Hwy 1, 5, or 101 as good options. I love Avenue of the Giants and Usal beach is great. Fern Canyon is where parts of Jurassic 2 were filmed. So much to see. Hwy 395 is east of the Sierras and is epic too

having lived in Humboldt County for almost 30 years enjoyed the ride back through the area. as an fyi we use to refer to the town of Orick at Meth north and between loss of logging industry, poverty and meth the town or Orick has become a ghost town. The motel was recently boarded up by the county due to the extreme unhealthy living condition so you no longer see the small population of people who use to live there. Really enjoyable ride and I agree you missed Ferndale and the Lost Coast both beautiful. Also along the Avenue of the Giants are several places to pull into to really experience the Redwoods. Hope you decide to do this ride again and explore a bit more!

I just drove the California coastal route this summer to go to my Grandfather's funeral in Humbolt County. It had been 7 years since I had driven it. The redwoods are amazing.
