Republic Steel Company founded in 1899 was the closest steel mill to the house that I grew up in. My grandfather, father, and uncles also lived near this steel mill in the Lansingville neighborhood. Stop 5 was on Poland Ave. This was an entrance to the mill. The Little Steel Strike of 1937 got violent in Youngstown, Ohio at the Stop 5 entrance. When I exited the area after doing this video, I was near that well known gate entrance. The "Old Timers" will remember this area.

Seriously, thank you, Lord! Well, my name is Shari, I'm writing Wild Bill the Freeway Cowboy's Mr. Bill Ruehle life. He was born on 712 wilkerson ave. It was Benjamin & Lena Ruehle built the house, 1920. Anyway his dad, uncle and grandpa worked there. I hear they called it steel town USA. It was so filled with smoke that they had fresh air camps on the weekends for the kids. 1930's I appreciate your work. Ill get back to your video.

The first building that you were in is the locomotive shop where the locomotives used at Republic were serviced and repaired.

Hi! I work there now. Just figured I'd throw out an update. Most of the building is still abandoned, but the portion of the building at the end of the video is now Birmingham Rail and Locomotive. We supply railroad and crane rail materials. Those are our cameras, and they are monitored. It would definitely be better to speak with someone if you're on site again, or call ahead of time. We don't bite and some of us are history dorks, but there are a lot of hazards and dangerous equipment.

I worked at Republic while attending YSU. I worked in Continuous Stretch, Bar and Tube mills. Made $3.52/hr back in 1969. Back then a man could work and support his family modestly on one paycheck. No OSHA. No EPA. 😮 Guys getting hurt/killed frequently. I remember the big boards where you entered to punch in that posted the "days since last death" "days since last injury" There was a nursing station under the old Center Street bridge where the timecard machines were. I remember the Battle of Stop 5 in 1969 where the Teamsters and FASH fought it out over the contract to haul out of there. Complete warzone. There's still a WKBN news film of the gunfight online. F the Lykes Company for buying out and shutting down YS&T where my Croatian granddad worked in the open hearths. Initiating the collapse in Ytown. 🤬

Ed, I believe that the company name was "Harnishfeger", short for Pawling and Harnishfeger. BTW I worked with you and Boats Downing at Stanspec 1984 to 1990. Mark J. Adamcik

The thing is/was these mills were horribly outdated. They employed thousands of workers and used the Bessemer method. You can make steel now of better strength and quality in mills that employee maybe 390-480 employees and the pollution to the environment is much less. Many employees would get hurt or even die doing g jobs in these mills. Plus the Unions kept pushing up salaries and benefits, which is what they are there to do for labor, but the cost to make the products became untenable and not sustainable. Very sad, so many great families and people were put out of work by failure to modernize and pure greed with no regards to the environment. Rivers were poisoned and land had to be cleaned. I grew up in WV coal camps and people had jobs but man the earth was destroyed and it was filthy with mercury and other contamination common.
