@Claesklaettermus Composite hollow insulators are consisting of a load-bearing insulating tube made of resin impregnated fibres, a housing (outside the insulating tube) madeof elastomeric material (for example silicone) and metal fixing devices at the ends of the insulating tube. They are intended for use in high voltage electrical equipment.

Silicone rubber has the ability to transfer its water-repellent properties into pollution layers which cover the surface. This eliminates the need for maintenance or cleaning of the high voltage apparatuses in polluted environments. Expensive solutions normally used for porcelain, such as cleaning, greasing or coating, can be avoided.

That explosion was scary! I can see how the composite ones are safer and more durable, but how are they more resistant to pollution?

What do you mean by composite insulators? Does it rephers to the use of carbon fiber materials, kevlar or some sort of polimer materials in the process of fabricating insulators?

if someone have to carry out a check up on the porcelain insulators , what is to be check?
