Have you seen the latest KZbin reaction videos for "My Momma Said"? With all of this ABBA hype after 40 years and the soon to be released "Voyage" LP/CD...young folks who only knew the name ABBA from from the Mama Mia musical...are now also listening to more of their previous work from earlier albums. Even Hip-Hop & Rap fans are giving them a listen on KZbin. ABBA's style will always have their original sound, but "My Momma Said" has that real funky guitar & bass line which presently deserves (yes...even after more than 40 years) recognition & airplay. Imagine Waterloo (with its catchy sound) hitting the radio stations back in 1974?...and at the same time the hidden gem "My Momma Said" never was even considered a single. It definitely was way before its time. With lots of promotional ads...many of these overlooked/underrated ABBA tracks would've been big. "Lay All Your Love On Me" (according to Bjorn in an interview) was never meant to be released as a single...and somehow at that time...several DJs found it...and played it..and the rest was history...including extended disco versions. I never forgot the reaction in dance clubs...as soon as the synthesizer beginning came on! 🎼👏👏👏👏

Oh yes, funky ABBA! They were experimenting with sounds and styles on the 'Waterloo' album. "My Mama Said" is definitely a hidden gem. It remained an obscure album track as it was hardly ever included on compilation albums and (as far as I know) never performed anywhere. For me it's a favorite though from the early years.

ABBA did what they wanted. They were a self contained indie band that did everything themselves. They had no corporate music industry puppeteers or overlords. ABBA had multiple sounds. People who know ABBA's entire catalogue know this. It is ABBA GOLD fans and the casual fans that have no idea of their output, particularly those from America. Also listen to the core fours solo stuff. Listen to B & B's ENTIRE catalogue -- 1966-present. This are the guys that wrote 'Kristina fran Duvemala', the operatic masterpiece that had the usual stuffy classical music critics gushing with praise calling it a masterpiece. A 39 song, 4+ hours staged. ABBA, since day one ABBA has had a high level of musicality musicianship and professionalism. If your not musically analytically minded, you missed. Many Americans missed it during the 70's, while the rest of the world recognized ABBA's greatness from day one.

For me Waterloo and ABBA are their most interesting albums from a composition and writing standpoint. They were experimenting with different sounds and flavors and I think it worked. Even though my favorite ABBA albums are The Visitors, Super Trouper and Voulez-Vous, but Waterloo and ABBA are so interesting and different. Love this song! A real hidden gem.

I absolutely love their earlier work and admire how well they could assimilate different stylistic fingerprints into an ABBA melody. The boogie breakdown on this song is phenomenal. The crunch guitar of glam band Sweet can be heard in “King Kong Song”, the guitar licks in “I’ve Been WaitIng For You” are pure Eric Clapton, the funky synth line in “Man in the Middle” come straight from Stevie Wonder...even the breathy vocals on “Honey Honey” seem inspired by The Archies. To me it shows how knowledgeable and observant ABBA were to the musical climate at the time....paying homage and giving nods of approval to their peers.

This one has never been one of my favourites, but it's good to hear the band experimenting with different styles and sounds right from the start of their career. It definitely has a menacing feel to it. My favourite from the 'Waterloo' album is 'Dance While The Music Still Goes On', which has a wonderful Phil Spector wall of sound, and really tugs at the heart-strings. This is such a strong tune, backed by tight instrumentation - the first time I heard this song, when I worked my back to the "Waterloo" LP, in the late '70s., it didn't really "land" for me. But, for 1974, this is quite something - genuinely funky, probably as close to funk as ABBA got, at least until the disco vibe of "Voulez-Vous". A song that's grown on me as I've got older, but - as you and others have said - hidden away in the archive. And, it's a pity that the lyrics aren't more consistent: the excuse, I guess, is that they were still feeling their way with English lyrics for an English-speaking market at this stage...

This is from the first album I owned, I was 7yo! In Sweden this band was considered decadent, cheap and morally lacking so I listened when nobody else was around. Even then I felt this track was in a league of its own, worlds better than the title track Waterloo, it felt really cool and forbidden, the bass to this day can't be beat and those ..xylophone sounds? are so glossy glossy.
