How Bjorn's lyrics create the hopelessness of the situation in the first verse is brilliant. 'Walking through an empty house, tears in my eyes' is simple but right to the point and your heart...I get goosebumps every time. This is ABBA & pop music (all genres) at their very very best.

Elise Walker 'complemented' actually. Common spelling mistake. Like 'stationary' and 'stationery'. I think Abba surprised even themselves. The two ladies were originally backing singers for Benny and Björn, in 1970. Apart from Agnetha, they were touching thirty-years-old when they sprung 'Waterloo' on the Anglosphere in '74. In those intervening years, their persistence ultimately paid dividends: how excited they must have been to figure out that although English was not their native language, they could still make a huge impact. They worked out their sound.

You might have also said 'accessibility' for 'simplicity' because what I think you mean is that you IDENTIFY with the emotions, the looks, the sounds in this pop video. They are clearly true to life. The ladies' expressions are not forced or exaggerated. Abba represented sincerity in the music industry, in their actual art - and, that, paradoxically takes a lot of courage. That's as true then as it is now. Thankfully the Internet age came after Abba. However, a lot of hard work has gone into making this pop video and getting its look right. In the 70s, with only a few TV channels and terrestrial television only, no video tape recorders yet, limited broadcasting on only one or two weekly programmes, along with much smaller budgets, the desire to make something nice was paramount: but how genuinely connected young people were then because they had all watched the same channel, the same band or pop video the night before!

It’s absolute insane how good this is as a piece of music. Vocalization, harmonies, contrapuntal secondary vocals, instrumentation, arrangement, overdubbing and sound engineering - it’s all off the freaking charts. There’s no pop act or production team that could come close to producing a track this good nowadays.
@amac2038 ай бұрын
Why can't you just praise the song without dissing an entire generation of talented artists? Good music is made yoday whether you like it or not.
@smakfu13758 ай бұрын
@@amac203 Because I don’t agree with you and I meant exactly what I said. Let’s be clear, I didn’t grow up with ABBA, and I’m not boomer. Most of today’s popular music is objectively corporatized, subjectively simplistic, crap. That doesn’t mean there aren’t talented musicians out there, but the major labels and production teams are exceedingly risk averse, which leads to everything sounding the same. You can pinpoint exactly when this became a problem: The 1996 telecommunications act, which deregulated broadcast markets in the US, allowing a small handful of large corporations to own multiple stations in the same market, across the US (previously, number of total stations owned and number of stations in a market were tightly regulated). In just 2 years, 6 decades of intense competition for market share was ended, as independent stations were bought up by large companies and the markets were segmented by demographic and music type. This led to market conditions where independent artists, smaller labels, independent stations, etc., simply ceased to exist. Those were the mechanisms that allowed “breakthroughs” and really interesting changes in the pop landscape. Since the late 90’s, the industry has become increasingly ossified, with the same dynamics extended into the online music arena: just a few collusory monoliths controlling the vast quantity of promotional effort and top-tier access to distribution. The entire major media complex is dealing with variations of the same theme: risk aversion, repetition, spectacle over substance and an objectively, and subjectively, measurable drop in quality. Much of this stems from too much control in the hands of a small number of giant (increasingly dysfunctional) corporations whose current business model is predicated on dictating what’s popular, versus innovation and discovery.
@amac2038 ай бұрын
@@smakfu1375 You are saying that of all the people in the entire world who create and make pop music, none of them are any good. This is a completely ridiculous concept. And saying any kind of music is "objectively" crap is idiotic. The reason that corporates make music in a certain way is because that is what sells, i.e. millions of people out there LIKE it. That's why pop music changes and it does continuously change, it's because taste changes. It's been happening since the dawn of time and it will continue to happen. In 50 years people will be doing the same song and dance you are now, but about today's music. But also, mainstream pop music is not the only music that is being made and to discount the talent of music producers who may not be part of a major label or continue to make music for the love of it is just laughable. .
