Pretty shocking that an Abbey Road audio engineer thinks that an 8-bit sample has 8 volume levels instead of 2^8 = 256.
@RumiSHatt6 жыл бұрын
And higher sampling rate gives you "more details per second"... Both statements he makes are actually wrong. You can simplify without telling incorrect things! And then there's the man who can hear all the overtones of a triangle, now that his equipment does 192k. And finally there are the title and subtitle from techradar. Hmmm.
@green95gt6 жыл бұрын
Yeah...i'm finding some audio engineers often make this mistake just as you have. They are not properly trained on how ADC and DAC works. I just found the same mistake from a company providing analog tape on their website.

He said 'levels', not 'decibels' though.
@Dougie-6 жыл бұрын
That doesn't change a thing, does it? 8 bits is 256 levels, not 8.
@laz2885 жыл бұрын
Its not levels it the size of the palette to match the sound. Think of 8 Bit Image you have 256 colors to recreate the picture. Going up to 16 (64k) and then 24 (16 mil) you can get a bigger palette to choose from. Higher rates do give you more head room so it does affect the level.

@ReferenceFidelityComponents Жыл бұрын
The problem I have with digitised music, especially playback, is that the soundstage sounds more squashed, flatter, more sat on and 2-D compared with analogue. Yes, the resolution and bandwidth and dynamic range is better BUT sound sat on is less preferable and realistic sounding than genuine time aligned speakers resolving a recording in more holographic 3-D sound where things like live recording front to back acoustics are present and where the soundscape takes on a more believable listenable and dynamic presence. As a speaker designer my home system has both in high end sources but its the vinyl replay that trounces the £9K digital source every time.

@mrbojangle61184 жыл бұрын
I sometimes wonder whether recording artists still need to use studios to record music. They could always use software on their own computer 💻. It would also be drastically cheaper.

If you recorded in both a home studio and a world class commercial facility as Abbey Road, you know the answer.
@MegaMech2 жыл бұрын
Depends on use-case. Vocal recording booths are usually pretty tiny anyway. So yea, lady gaga could build her own studio in her home and never bother going to the recording studio again. Honestly, the music is so bad anyway it would make no difference. Classical music though, piano, orchestra, it makes all the difference. Some rehearsal venues could easily sound passable though.

Funny that he says "obviously you don't want massive speakers in a small room", which I agree with, then the second after that we see 3 huge B&W speakers in a rather cramped area, with a glass wall behind, which cannot be a worse environment for such speakers.

8 bits is 8 levels of audio? I bet he has no clue about Nyquist theorem either. This only shows that ignorant people can still get jobs at prestigious companies. And they talk about sample rate as if it's the answer to good sound quality. Downsample your 192k to 48k and you'll hear no difference.

Had to add a dislike on this one. Here was a perfect opportunity for such a lovely and respected studio to highlight the devastating issue that is... "The loudness Wars" in modern records. Otherwise would have been a brilliant video, just seems a shame if an artist is recorded well, with great mics, in beautiful surroundings, by some of world's most talented engineers and is then mastered down to a 4db range!!! Hi-Res or not... like Newt from Aliens once said "it won't make any difference".
@michaelangeloh.53837 жыл бұрын
Just because you have the Loudness War on your mind you give this a dislike?... They likely never touched upon that in these interviews, more focusing on technical quality as opposed to the process of mixing and mastering. A lot of them seem to be about capturing and recording in this video and what thát process does to affect the quality. - There are loads of videos about the Loudness War, we get it. And don't get me wrong, I'm all about that. I just didn't think it was "missing" here, because that's for later stages. Obviously these people won't mess up recordings by overloading their equipment. They were talking about THE equipment and technology. Not exactly how to use it and then prevent "loudness".
