I was just talking with my sister about why we both never have had any food issues. We came to the conclusion that it was our moms no fuss cooking. She made traditional normal home cooked meals and we ate it. Period. No discussion about carbs, vitamins, diets. So I totally agree that kids take notice about what parents think about food, diets etc.

This may be true and it's really a healthy way to feed kids, no doubt. But my mom was the same and I got ED and started overexercising in my late teens. Just because I wanted to fit in a popular body type which was the thinner the better. I think it was because all models, actresses, and popular girls were conventionally thin. So yeah, seems like many girls were doomed. Hopefully, this will change with time

I believe my son emulated me because I have had an ED since my 20s. I counted calories every day of my life for YEARS when he was younger…and I weighed less than 100 lbs. He now has a bad relationship with food, too. People need to know that boys also can have disordered eating! Wish I had found you earlier, Abbey!

I used food in the reverse way. Bingeing. It was a maladaptive behavior I developed in childhood due to family issues. Brought that behavior into adulthood and I have tried diets and programs but realized I act the same toxic way by being too controlling with food or over exercising. Ugh the saying, “moderation is key” is apt here. Good luck to you and your son.

Awe, I love Holly. I remember watching that video she made and thinking “Abbey would not like any of this” haha - I was basically right! But, it’s a good reminder to me that everyone is on their own food journey. She has said in several videos how she struggles with weight gain and body image issues, which makes me sad for her since she’s so cool and naturally beautiful. Hopefully she’ll be able to find peace with food and her body one day.

I believe I would have not only been healthier and happier, I would have saved thousands of $$$$, and not ridden the "roller-coaster" of sacrificing, short term, unsustainable (be it financially or long-term unhealthy, - usually both), quick weight loss plans. I know this message is long but, my decision to lose weight was health, and NOT appearance based, you totally support and encourage that, and provided with your information, I actually lost more, have maintained it, over 2 years now, and I don't "work out" like crazy. Drinking with a straw can help minimize the amount of contact that the lemon water has with the teeth! I was reading the comments and a lot of people were referring to the “diet bingo”, and I had an idea - you can make a diet bingo card with things like “lemon water”, “low fat something”, “detox” etc. and then cross it every time the person who’s diet you’re reviewing says or does it. And we’ll see if you can have a bingo 😁

So about the lemon water- i’m 8 and bit months pregnant and when I was about 5 and 1/2 I had a pretty bad case of gastritis which they found out was due to my pregnancy causing gallstones because of the pregnancy they obviously were not going to remove my gallbladder and talked about a precautionary diet so I could carry to term. The doctors did recommend lemon water because if it’s alkalizing properties. I don’t know if it was psychosomatic but I will say incorporating lemons and limes into my water and having lemonade when my stomach is really bad has been incredibly helpful.
@adbreon
@adbreon 2 жыл бұрын
I’m glad it helped you but there is no evidence based medicine recommending lemon water for gallstones. It’s from an old folk remedy and several studies have proven it has no effect. The only way to reduce the likelihood of gallstones is a diet low in cholesterol and high in soluble fiber…because that’s how you reduce cholesterol, which is what gallstones are made of. Cholesterol is a lipid and not particularly affected by pH so neither acids nor alkaline substances are going to have much effect.
@ohleander02

It's possible you felt a little better because the lemon juice was raising the acid content of your stomach; but it couldn't have been doing anything about gallstones.

Yes! I second this. My surgeon wanted me to follow a low(ish) protein (60-80 grams), ultra low carb (no more than 5 carbs a day), and low fat (like, half an avocado a day). At a check up, he was horrified to find that i was eating around 800 calories a day while running 10 miles at a time. He said that i shouldn't be eating that many calories, so i cut down to around 500-600. I got to the point where I stopped recovering from my workouts, was exhausted all the time, and stayed constantly sore. I've been seeing a dietician for 2 weeks, and she was horrified at my surgeon's advice, and was sad at how much he damaged my relationship with food. I'd love to hear Abby's point of view on this.

As a psychotherapist, this video you have created is absolutely shocking to me. Holly has spoken about her ED and body dysmorphia. She did not share this video in the service of health advice. Your tone, even criticising the supplements she takes for her health (while perhaps ineffective, none of them dangerous) is at times cruel. The reality is you posted a video shaming and knit-picking the diet of a woman who is open about having an eating disorder... do you have any sense of empathy or self-reflection on how this might be damaging to her? She is a person who deserves better than being ragged on and criticised by a dietician on the internet for your financial benefit.

You're not wrong, however 1 gallon (3.7L) aren't overly excessive. Especially if you workout or on a generally hot day. I routinely drink 3-3.5L every single day but on hot summer days I can drink more. But then I sometimes add electrolytes because sometimes I feel like I could keep drinking forever and never satisfy my thirst unless I have 1 bottle of electrolyte enriched water.

@Abbey Sharp, I need to say that regular folate suplementation is recommended for all women in reproductive age by particular gynae associations ( official guidelines) because it is crucial for the nervous system development in pregnancy. In many countries (including US and western countries) majority of women do not plan their pregnancies and start taking folate too late. Folate prevents serious congenital defects. Also, she mentions that she is anemic so folate is helpful for that as well.

I would love of the description for the video summarized that info so that if I am listening while I take a walk or drive, I could screen shot it and saw it since I can't take notes. Also, I completely feel for Holly trying to follow good advice but getting so much info it is hard to know who to trust. Also as someone who was a dancer and is in Holly s age range - so shaped by the same beauty messages - the voice in your head regarding how thin you should be is really demanding and loud. I have struggled with food daily for over 35 years. I judge myself for every bite of food I eat and every pound gained or lost, is a measure of my value. It is exhausting.
