Articles: *"Just write, even if it sucks!"* Me: *"That arguably makes it worse!"* All my characters have their own aesthetic boards that I look at regularly. And I have a playlist full of songs that feels like the story or characters to me.

I throw in the other two senses. I'll buy a perfume I think a character will wear or get a candle that claims to smell like something related to the book. I'll also try to make my writing snacks and drinks books-related sometimes. I'll get bagels if I'm writing about New York or drink tea when writing about my Englishman.

I'm a film student, and recently I've been trying to get some screenwriting done. I stumbled upon your videos and man, have they been a great help, thank you so much. One thing I do to get inspired to write my scripts that I think would also work while writing a novel is to make a Spotify playlist: if your book were a movie, and it had a soundtrack, what would that be like? I also use it as a way to further explore my characters: what type of songs do they listen to and why? Really helps me get in the mood and visualize my scenes :)

I used to do this for writing poetry - I used photographs that I had taken that fit the mood of the poem and sometimes would write whilst listening to a song or piece of music which did the same, on occasion matching, or closely matching to the rhythm. I don't know why I've not tried it with storytelling, but thank you for the excellent reminder. Much love. xx

I'm doing a crash course of your videos.I wrote a book with microsoft word. I don't even want to say how long it took me to reorder/edit (5 years). I tried Scrivener and abandoned it. This time, with the help of your videos I have over 100,000 words copied into Scivener. I'm outlining and I have hope it will go more smoothly. I think having visuals and audio will help me stay immersed in my scenes--perhaps even take fewer runs at the refrigerator. I'll be signing up on your paid site soon. So worth it. In gratitude.

Thank you for this video full of practical and good ideas! Sometimes I need silence, but the right music can really help me get in the right mood to write ...or do anything, honestly, especially creative activities. Carefully selected songs can help find the right words for the emotions the character is experiencing if the scene is difficult to put into words. But otherwise, I prefer instrumentals because if I listen to a song I can't help but pay attention to the lyrics so it distracts me.

I know for me as with many, the reason I clicked on this video right now was that my depression (yes, even happy people who have completely moved on from crazy disappointmentsssss and rely on God sometimes have them in moments of weakness). The thing is, I think I just need to shove those attacking thoughts aside and simply flip my focus to what really matters to me Right Now, which is saying the helpful, encouraging things I need to say to the world through (clean) creative mediums (such as writing), God willing. You might even have your own personal "Aha moment" and remind yourself that your purpose is to share that with everyone! Keep Rocking!

Movies and TV series made in our country use a lot of background music. Either to evoke emotion or to convey it in some way. So using music to set the mood of a scene is truly an effective way to get in the writing mood. Some writers (from Wattpad, not sure if you're familiar) even have playlists included in their books

I absolutely LOVE your videos! And now I'm going to love those two links for music and sounds. Some of the things that help me are: *A file with headshots of the faces I'm using to represent my characters - main, along with key sidekicks in a vertical row in paint, along with a photo of something representing the location where the story takes place. Then, I resize those, along with my writing file, so I can see all three while working. *A playlist in KZbin. Currently, yacht rock. I use AdBlockPlus, so I don't have to deal with ads interrupting the flow. *Often, I'm most productive when I keep Canon in D and River Flows in You playing softly in the background. I don't know why because, given a choice, I'm not much into classical-type music. But it works.

my tips for getting into a writing mood for those who are easily distracted, is to seclude yourself into a quiet place and kinda daydream about your story, so that when you have ideas, you'll feel like you want to write them. also, listen to music (before you write) that has something to do with your story, it will kinda make a little music video in your head that will both give you ideas and get you pumped to write! and finally, if you have depression, use it in your favor! like for an example, if you think about all of the celebrities that are the same age as you and what they accomplished, it will create like a drive to do something with your life, like writing or whatever lol. and another example is to use your depression through your oc. it will almost make you feel like you're him or her or them (which in my opinion is kinda fun). this will both give an authentic depressed feel to your story and be a way to express your depression into good material. i hope these tips make sense and helps anyone who gets easily distracted get into a writing mood. good luck and stay healthy!

I needed this. I've been in a funk, and I keep sitting down and staring at a partially completed document... The Pinterest board is a different change of pace that I'm hoping will get me out of the slump. Thank you!

Okay, I completely agree with Abbie. However, the following is my detailed opinion and perspective on this subject: The very core of "getting into the writing mood" (better described as 'forcing yourself to write') is what everyone tells you and what everyone in the comments is going against: "Just write." I speak from my experience - just write. However, there is something about this phrase of advice that is missing, that most fail to mention - ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS. I believe this is crucial. With distractions, you will never get anything done. The best way to do this is to turn off your Internet. Disconnect your computer from the network. Wanting to listen to a song? Feeling the temptation to find synonyms for a word? Don't. Write a note to yourself, highlight it and search it up later, when you have fulfilled your goal for that writing session and have allowed yourself to turn on the Internet again. It's also important that you keep all your writing documents inside the computer itself, so you don't need Internet access to write, and can back up your files. Then, sit and write. If you're struggling, nothing will come to mind. You may sit and stare at the screen, or your wall, for 30 minutes or longer. But no matter what, STAY. Eventually, something will come up. You will write a few words, then lines, then a paragraph. Now, this isn't to say that this method ALWAYS works. Occasionally, there will be certain external factors that simply prevent you from writing. The best example of this is a sickness. If you are sick, your brain is under strain and will not function correctly. Same goes if you are tired; you got very little sleep or have over exhausted yourself. In these cases and similar, you should not even try to write. Get rest and return to the chair when you are healthy and able to focus. Aside from that. The advice you provided in this video, Abbie, I view more as a complimentary addition. Aesthetics and ambiences truly help to inspire you and get you excited about your story! When you spend some time thinking about your story and doing the things you mentioned, it will help even more to write. To anyone struggling, I wish you the best of luck! Honestly, maybe the method I spoke of just works for me, along with a few others. If you have other ways of going about writing, or this method never worked, then by all means, do what you please! Most importantly, make sure to get rest. That is the only solution to poor mental health and creative burnout, neither of which will get you any progress in writing. In fact, it will only make it worse. In order to write productively and well, YOU MUST REST.

You offer such good advice I had to subscribe! I usually prefer reading articles when it comes to looking for help because I concentrate more than when I'm just listening (because I tend to space out) but you help so much I make myself pay more attention to you, thanks so much everything
