Laughton considered himself a serious dramatic actor, and only accepted because he had devoted himself to theater and producing and his movie career was in hiatus at that point. Ironically, this role gave him enough spotlight to land the part of Graccus in Spartacus (1960), which many considered the height of his career.

Even in something as tongue in cheek as this is , Laughton captures the screen and makes it a lesson in comedic acting . He died far too soon, but the quality of his other work lives on . Thank you for uploading , I didn't know this cheap laughs film existed .

Who did the "waves crashing through the window" gag better, d'ye think, Lou Costello or Shemp Howard? Also, can someone put together a compilation of all the times Kidd sneezes from snorting snuff? I mentioned it to some friends of mine, and they're interested....

Yes, he was the star of the 1945 movie in the title role. The film went out-of-copyright, so has been uploaded here several times. Here is one good copy of it ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnm7mJesgNyEabc

How are the Mighty Fallen? It is tragic that such a superb actor like Laughton had to make these cheap "comedies".

@@arthursteven5601 ... According to their Wiki entry "they were the most popular comedy team in the USA of the 1940s and early 1950s and were the highest-paid entertainers in the world during World War 2." As for Laughton, he was only too glad of the $25,000 he received for appearing in this film, as it went towards buying an expensive painting for his art collection.

Laughton admired Lou Costello and wanted to do the film to learn from him.
