Just listened to the Bela Lugosi episode before this one. These classic horror/dramatic actors had some impressive comedy chops.

Why did old timey people want random music in the middle of comedy and/or dramatic radio shows?

@@OTRHALLOWEENHOLIDAZE Several reasons: One; if there were songs in the middle, it was considered a variety show. Two; many singers/groups worked the same vaudeville circuits as comedians before the days of radio, and this was a way to give their old friends national exposure. Third; the sponsors of the shows could use those singers to plug their products.Fourth; the producers of these shows managed both the actors and singers/bands. Once in a while, a show would get lucky and have a singer who could also do comedy like Dennis Day on Jack Benny, but not as a rule. Hope that helps!
