Had the fortune of listening in person yesterday. Amazing. So human. So humble. So strong and brave. Many silent in the audience. Others, passionate supporters. At the end of ceremony the graduating class chanted, “Abby! Abby! Abby!”

I happened to see the rest of the video and loved how he made the comment that Abby stuck around as each student walked the stage to receive their degree. Not only do I respect the speech she made but that she stuck around and honored each and every student with the respect to sit there and celebrate their hard work and achievement with the families and friends. Many celebrities give their speeches and then walk off and go back to their lives.

So brave! Such an important message. Hope that young people who might be completely depressed by all that is happening currently, will be inspired by her example to keep fighting!

For 30 minutes she scolded, barked, misrepresented Christian precepts, rebuked the male gender and promoted her own selfish interests. Not a ounce of wisdom to impart to the recent graduates. The administration should be ashamed for putting such an inappropriate individual on the podium for such an important event.

Very inspirational speech; however, she failed to recognize the unborn Abby. "Do unto others" includes the "othered" unborn. THEIRS are the voices which are least heard. "Whatsoever you do to the least of these, you do unto Me." We have all, including Jesus, come by way of the miniscule zygote/blastocyst/helpless fetus/ infant/toddler, etc. Justice demands that we give a hand up to these others, just as others helped US. A place at the table or overturning tables means NOTHING if, on our journey, we have trampled the lives of the unborn.

Thank you for your comment. Wambach twisted Christian teaching in a way that is inexcusable at a Jesuit college.

I know right?? The fact that we still have to argue for human rights for all is so cringe. Pathetic that people don't agree with rights for all. Preach.

Multiple things: 1. Since when is saying "Black" appropriate after all these years of arguing to say "African Americans?" 2. Is this what students want to hear on their celebratory day? I would have walked out... 3. This speech feels like it is everything but about the success of these students Bring back Frank Sinatra...
@paigebecker52502 жыл бұрын
Black as always and continues to be appropriate. Not all Black people are African Americans. Being uncomfortable with saying black implies you are uncomfortable with Black people. Sounds like the students loved this speech and loved hearing future advice. They know they succeeded as they're at the graduation ceremony. Knowing how to continue to be successful is what Abby was telling them.

@@paigebecker5250 In terms of the "black" issue, this was just something many teachers and faculty members found issue with students writing and saying in public highschools (in my personal experience), not my personal preference.

Funny. The students gave her a rousing ovation at the end and no one booed or walked out. 🤷♀️

I must've heard a different speech. Are you racist and homophobic, or just 1 of those? I find they usually go hand-in-hand.
@heatherprock82052 жыл бұрын
It’s appropriate to say black bc so many black people aren’t from Africa. It seems you’re in the minority- I loved it
