That's funny. I would use a separate outlet for each one. Using an a power strip isn't a good idea. Make sure you give each fan the amount of amps it needs. Check how many amps they draw, and check what the power strip is made for. But once they are running you should be fine. Starting them one by one like y'all did was a good move.
